WHEN THERE IS NO FRONTIER
WHEN THERE IS NO FRONTIER is an exhibition of fantastical paintings in oil, watercolor, and coffee by Miami-based painter Reynier Llanes.
Regarded as one of the most complex and lucid artists of his generation following the Cuban tradition of narrative symbolist painting, Llanes blends ideas and images to present vivid symbols in sweeping settings with a haunting semblance of reality. His visual wit is on full display, infusing tropical idioms with irony and humor.
Llanes’ work stems from a fascination with the creation of parallel universes as a means of escaping reality. Responding to collective crises that permeate our daily consciousness, he presents viewers with a painted realm of magical landscapes, still-lifes, and portraits into which we can temporarily escape and find amusement.
Discussing the role of symbolism in his work, Llanes says, “When I discovered metaphors I was very young I think it was 13. That poetry changed my perception; the visual implement that I was using in my work at the time. I could create a symbolism and interpret it to a different reality – to create a different concept that I always use in my work. There is a context and evolution of my work that started happening just in the beginning of 2020 to the current times. I feel to be a journalist to describe our society, to describe our cultural changes.” (From Reynier Llanes Chronicles)
