The Museum of Art DeLand frequently hosts events that benefit the Museum and help to engage with the community. There are several ways to donate your time and services as a volunteer to support the Museum. There is the Docent Volunteer Program, Student Volunteer Program, the Internship Program, the Museum Guild and Krewe Nouveau. Each group and/or program offers a different level of support and commitment.

Docent Volunteer Program

At the Museum of Art – DeLand, Docent Volunteers play a variety of roles including leading gallery tours, acting as Docents-in-the-Gallery to answer visitor questions, and assisting Museum education staff at public programs that inform, stimulate and educate visitors about the Museum and the artwork on view.

Our Docents are a diverse group of trained volunteers who share a passion for art and the community. They are active, enthusiastic, imaginative and knowledgeable. Historically, a docent was a tour guide who talked while visitors listened.

Today, docents do so much more than just talk. At the Museum of Art – DeLand, Florida Docents help visitors of all ages discover the world of art by creating conversation- based tours centered around the art. They provide a vital link between what is displayed in the Museum and how visitors respond to what they see.

Becoming a Docent

To qualify as a docent you should have an abiding interest in the visual arts, have good public speaking skills, work well with children and adults, and be flexible and dependable. Docent candidates participate in a comprehensive training course and must be available for a specific number of volunteer hours per year.
Candidates in the Docent Volunteer Program must complete an initial year-long training in art appreciation that includes classes on: how to look at, analyze and discuss works of art; and public engagement and interactive teaching techniques. After successful completion of the initial training, docents will be expected to commit to touring and education outreach programs, as well as continuing their education for a minimum of one year.

Student Volunteer Program

The Museum of Art – DeLand provides a variety of educational and professional training opportunities for students in grades 10 through 12, undergraduate and graduate level university and college students who are interested in a museum, education, art or marketing career.

A unique service-learning opportunity in a museum setting, not typically found in most academic settings, develops job skills that build a resume and networking opportunities to assist in a student’s job search.

Volunteer service hours are documented and can be submitted for school-based community service credits and/or course credit.

To apply to the Student Volunteer program, you must submit a completed Student Volunteer Application. Volunteer applications are accepted on an ongoing basis. Once approved, new volunteers may be required to attend an orientation session that offers a general understanding of the Museum’s history, operations and programs.

Volunteer hours are available on both a regular and on-call basis during weekdays and weekends year round. Volunteer assignments are based on the needs of the Museum and the applicant’s interests and skills.

Internship Program

The Internship Program at the Museum of Art – DeLand provides a wide variety of educational and professional training opportunities for college students. Museum internships are designed primarily for students studying art history, studio art, or art education.

Museum internships are non-paid, but academic credit may be received depending on the intern’s college program. Students are encouraged to ask their school’s academic advisers about the process for receiving academic credit.

Internships are designed to last for a semester. Interns are expected to work 8 to 10 hours per week or as required for college credit. Schedules are arranged to meet both the needs of the student and the Museum.

Applications should be made 30 days prior to the proposed starting date or as soon as possible. Selected applicants will be contacted for an interview and considered for placement based on the needs of the Museum.
