Everett Spruill, painter, photographer, and print-maker, will give an artist talk at our main Museum location, part of a speaker series exploring Black art, artists, and history in collaboration with the Fall Festival of the Arts – DeLand.

ABOUT THE ARTIST

Everett Spruill was born in Birmingham, Alabama in 1954 . His exposure to museums and classical music at an early age would prove to have a great influence on his artistic development.

Spruill is most known for his “Old School Jazz and Blues Series”, inspired by the work of his favorite artists, Romare Bearden and Pablo Picasso. He creates colorful paintings and collages of the fathers of Jazz as well as African themed images with a complex variation of paints, recycled and repurposed materials. Everett is considered one of Central Florida’s biggest influences on African-American Art. He designed and created art for two of Walt Disney World’s Black Heritage Celebrations, seven works for The Amway Art Collection and currently conducts art workshops for central Florida youth through his non-profit arts foundation.

Spruill’s approach to art is democratic and springs from his belief that art belongs to, and should be shared with, the masses, which is why you’ll be as likely to find his work in galleries, high-end department stores like Bloomingdales or neighborhood community centers, and the walls of local restaurants. He makes sure his art is where the people are. Spruill accepts both public and private commissions.
