Summer Camp Program

Teen Arts Academy is the Museum of Art – DeLand’s summer camp program designed especially for teens ages 12 and up. Students will be able to explore new avenues of creative thinking and innovative artmaking. Teen Arts Academy students will engage in 2D and 3D methods and will study art techniques, art history, and a variety of art media. No previous experience necessary!  Visits to the Museum’s galleries and walkable field trips to local landmarks will enhance the educational experience and provide additional motivation and inspiration.

The Teen Arts Academy meets at our downtown location at 100 N. Woodland Blvd. from 10am-3pm Monday through Friday of each week.

2024 Teen Arts Academy Schedule

June 10th-14th All About Me with Bryan Carson

For ages 12 and up

“All About Me” is a week of exploration that focuses solely on the student’s interests and own portrait or likeness. We will explore various ways to portray the student’s likeness through a variety of styles, mediums, and references to art history. Examples of these could be:  painted self-portraits in a simplified style of Chuck Close using the grid method, portraits in graphite that are first distorted through stretching them in Photoshop, cutting up and rearranging features of the face, a portrait full of pattern, whiplash lines and organic shapes in the Art Nouveau style, or a collage of images that describe the student, similar to the work of James Rosenquist.

June 17th-21st The Arts and Crafts of Japan with Fontaine Rodgers

For ages 12 and up

Sumi-e is the centuries old Japanese art of monochrome painting using black ink, special brushes, and traditional marks originally inspired by kanji characters.  This session will include origami, Japanese paper cutting, and a traditional dragon painting with accents in blue or gold.

July 8th-12th ARTivism: Community Engaged Creative Explorations with Dr. Rajni Shankar-Brown

For ages 12-15 (exceptions by approval)

How do the arts bring diverse individuals and communities together? How can we use our creative talents for improving local art engagement and social change? This week fosters a variety of skills in the areas of fine arts, creativity, collaboration and community engagement. Immersive learning activities are designed to inspire creative thought processes and produce diverse community-engaged skillsets. Students will nurture their artistic creativity while building leadership skills and confidence. We will create a variety of art, meet local leaders, learn about local community organizations, and develop a collective project for achieving social impact. Through an array of hands-on activities, Teen Arts Academy participants will be encouraged to inquire, explore, reflect, CREATE, and grow!

July 15th-19th ARTivism: Developing as Artists, Global Citizens, and Leaders with Dr. Rajni Shankar-Brown

For ages 12-15 (exceptions by approval)

How do the arts advance human rights and global movements? What roles can artists play in positively impacting our world? This week fosters imagination, leadership, and global citizenship. Students will be immersed in interactive exercises to explore and develop their artistic skillsets. We will explore global issues, learn about the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, study diverse artists and cultures, and examine the powerful role of the arts in our interconnected world.
