SUMMARY:Docent Training Program
DESCRIPTION:Are you an art lover\, history buff\, public speaker\, or people-person? If you answered yes\, then we invite you to apply for our upcoming Docent Training Program. When you train to become a docent\, you’ll enjoy a mini-art history course with our Associate Curator of Education\, Martha Underriner\, who has an MA in Art Education and an MFA in Studio Art. The training program will be 8-week consecutive class\, meeting Tuesdays from 10 – 11:30 a.m. starting on September 12 and running through October 31. \nDocents are a vital link between what’s displayed in the Museum and how visitors respond to what they see. Our docents are a diverse group of volunteers who share a passion for art and the community. They are active\, enthusiastic\, imaginative\, and knowledgeable. Historically\, a docent was a tour guide who talked while visitors listened. Today\, docents do so much more than just talk.  Our docents help visitors of all ages discover the world of art by creating inquiry-based field studies and tours centered on the art. \n  \nTo qualify as a docent you should have: \n\n\n\n\n\nAn abiding interest in the visual arts\nGood public speaking skills\nAbility to work well with children and adults\nFlexibility\, dependability\, time\, and commitment\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n2023-2024 Docent Training Program Dates\nTuesday\, September 12\, 2023\n \nTuesday\, September 19\, 2023 \nTuesday\, September 26\, 2023 \nTuesday\, October 3\, 2023\n \nTuesday\, October 10\, 2023 \nTuesday\, October 17\, 2023 \nTuesday\, October 24\, 2023 \nTuesday\, October 31\, 2023 \n  \nTo apply\, click the link HERE and follow the application instructions. \n

SUMMARY:William Entrekin
DESCRIPTION:Born to a small town in Georgia\, William Entrekin was often viewed as an outsider. As a child\, he found himself spending more and more time alone. Those days of solitude marked the beginnings of a vibrant imagination and detailed attention to the beauty of his surroundings. Entrekin describes his perspective when looking at painting as trying to “imagine myself inside it and I imagine myself breathing in it.” He continues by saying that “When I can feel the crispness of the air\, smell the trees or sea air around me\, then I know that it’s right.” \nThe works in this exhibition include egg tempera\, oils and watercolor and the subjects range from the woods to the water\, from figurative to still life. \nExhibition Details\nWILLIAM ENTREKIN: The Keen Observer \nJuly 14 – October 1\, 2023 \nMuseum of Art – DeLand \n100 N. SUMMARY:Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:The Museum of Art – DeLand and the African American Museum of the Arts present an Artist Talk with Michel Delgado\, whose exhibition\, A Quiet Revelation will be on view at our downtown DeLand gallery. \nEVENT DETAILS\nArtist Talk with Michel Delgado \nSaturday\, April 22\, 2023  |  12 – 1 p.m. \nNoble “Thin Man” Watts Amphitheater at the African American Museum of the Arts \n 325 S. Clara Ave. DeLand\, Florida 32720 \nAdmission: Free \n  \nPresented in partnership with the African American Museum of the Arts. \n  \nARTIST STATEMENT\nGrowing up in Senegal\, on the west coast of Africa\, life and art shared the same space. They were indistinguishable. As a young boy in Dakar\, I learned that art is the tool I have for a direct and honest conversation with my own heart. Art always has been my rescuer\, my liberator – creatively\, emotionally\, spiritually. I’m a self-taught painter\, able to create in any media\, always painting work that is straightforward and personal\, work coming from a place within me that is constantly loud and growing. My work has been called naive. I fill my canvases with intense and basic colors\, crisply painted shapes\, and meticulous detail; I make work without conventional representational techniques; my work is free of metaphor\, irony and paradox. I paint straightforward narratives\, stories of my journey and memories of everyday experiences. Everything I create and paint comes through my relationship with the world around me\, my direct response to my fantasies\, my wonder and my spiritual growth. No journey in my life remains as straightforward as painting. \n  \n \nThis exhibition and its attendant events are funded in part by a grant from South Arts in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and the Florida Division of Arts & Culture. \n  \nImage: Michel Delgado\, Will You Change Me This Time?\, Mixed Media on Watercolor Paper\, 23 x 17 in.\, 2014

DESCRIPTION:Unabashed and daring\, bold and bright\, Michel Delgado’s concern about the human condition is apparent in all he paints. Tragedy\, abuse\, the mundane moments of everyday being\, the happiness we know\, the fears we keep at bay\, the stories of life. Each is painted with an intense energy that literally flows off the canvas to permeate hearts and minds. \nMichel Delgado was born on the west coast of Africa\, in Dakar\, Senegal. Throughout the 1980s\, he lived in Paris\, exploring and participating in the city’s art scene. He immigrated to the United States in 1988\, and now works and creates in his studio in Chicago and South Florida. His work is represented in private collections throughout the nation\, and is part of the public collections of the Plains Art Museum in Fargo\, North Dakota and the American Visionary Museum in Baltimore\, Maryland. \nExhibition Details\nMichel Delgado: A Quiet Revelation \nApril 21 – July 2\, 2023 \nMuseum of Art – DeLand\, Downtown\n \n100 N. SUMMARY:Art Creative Entrepreneurship Talk
DESCRIPTION:The Museum of Art – DeLand\, Stetson University\, and The Prince Entrepreneurship Program the School of Business Administration present an Art Creative Entrepreneurship Talk with artist Michel Delgado\, whose exhibition\, A Quiet Revelation will be on view at our downtown DeLand gallery. \nEVENT DETAILS\nArt Creative Entrepreneurship Talk with Michel Delgado \n Thursday\, April 20\, 2023  |  6 – 7 p.m. \nStetson University\, Lynn Business Center Room 108 (Rinker Auditorium) \n 345 N. Woodland Blvd\, DeLand\, FL 32723 \nAdmission: Free \n  \nPresented in partnership with Stetson University. Co-sponsored by The Prince Entrepreneurship Program the School of Business Administration. \n  \nImage: Michel Delgado\, Swimming in Mystery\, Mixed Media on Watercolor Paper\, 25 x 21 in\, 2014

SUMMARY:Andrea Kowch
DESCRIPTION:Inspired by memories\, inner emotions\, history\, and a fascination with nature and the human psyche\, the stories behind Andrea Kowch’s figurative realist paintings stem from life’s emotions and experiences\, resulting in narrative\, allegorical imagery that illustrates the parallels between human experience and the mysteries of the natural world. \nAndrea Kowch\, The Travelers\, 2011\, Acrylic on Canvas\, 36 x 36 in\, Collection of David Farber\nThe lonely\, desolate American landscape encompassing the paintings’ subjects serves as an exploration of nature’s sacredness and a reflection of the human soul\, symbolizing all things powerful\, fragile\, and eternal. These real\, yet dreamlike\, scenarios serve as metaphors for the human condition\, all retaining a sense of vagueness\, involving and motivating the viewer in uncovering the various layers of mood and meaning to form conclusions from their own perspective\, despite the main idea that will always be before them. \nWe all share a common thread\, and as active participants in an ever-changing modern world\, the purpose of Kowch’s work is to remind viewers of these places that we sometimes perceive no longer exist\, and to recognize and honor them as a part of our history that is worth preserving. \nIn juxtaposing the human form with animals and a bygone uninhibited American landscape\, Kowch’s work provides glimpses into “rooms\,” those oftentimes chaotic places we possess internally. The rural\, Midwestern landscape of her home state serves as backdrop for the stage of human emotions. The animals present are vehicles for expressing the feelings and underlying tensions suppressed behind the human mask. Symbolic explorations of the soul and events concerning our environment are expressed through the combination of these elements to transform personal ideas into universal metaphors. \nEXHIBITION DETAILS\nAndrea Kowch: Mysterious Realms \nJanuary 17 – April 9\, 2023 \nMuseum of Art – DeLand  |  Downtown Gallery \n100 N.
