SUMMARY:Adolf Dehn
DESCRIPTION:Adolf Dehn was one of the most notable lithographers of the 20th century\, known for both his technical skills and his depictions of human eccentricities. Today\, his work resides in over 80 museums\, including every major museum in New York City. He holds the record for inclusion in the most Whitney Museum of American Art “Annual” and “Biennial” than any other artist to date. \nBorn in Waterville\, Minnesota\, in 1895\, Adolf Dehn created artwork from an early age and after formal training began creating ink drawings and lithographs by 1920. His images of the Roaring ’20s\, the Depression era and New York City appeared in magazines including Vanity Fair\, Vogue and New Yorker. His lithographs spoofed all aspects of society\, and his watercolors depicted beautiful landscapes. \nOn the heels of his success as a landscape watercolorist and chronicler of various American regions during the Depression\, Dehn undertook several commercial commissions starting in the late 1940s\, including Standard Oil. Dehn completed numerous drawings and watercolors of oil fields and industrial activities in Venezuela\, Mexico\, and Louisiana. \nExhibition Details\nAdolf Dehn: Prints & Watercolors \nOctober 18\, 2024 – January 19\, 2025 \nMuseum of Art – DeLand \n600 N. The training program will be an 8-week class\, meeting on a select Wednesday each month from 10:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. \nDocents are a vital link between what’s displayed in the Museum and how visitors respond to what they see. Our docents are a diverse group of volunteers who share a passion for art and the community. They are active\, enthusiastic\, imaginative\, and knowledgeable. SUMMARY:Carrie Ann Baade
DESCRIPTION:Carrie Ann Baade is an American painter whose work deeply engages with art history. By quoting\, interacting with\, and reclaiming masterpieces in a surreal\, biographical narrative\, Baade creates a unique dialogue with the past. \n“As the steward and axman\,” Baade says\, “I return to haunting moments in art history to pick through the ‘boneyard’ of painting with reverence. I am a scavenger salvaging lost aesthetics seeking to reclaim\, not merely as a quotation. Composing with a woman’s voice\, the oil painting is the basis for dialog with the art’s past through complex imagery that unburdens the restrictions of a feminist psyche. These are paintings made of paintings\, fractured and altered to bare my psychological revelations and exhumed life lessons.” \nShe continues\, “Mining imagery from Renaissance and Baroque paintings\, these fragments provide a foundation to construct layered narratives that resemble fantastical parables. The compositions combine personal and classical symbology with luminescent color\, communicating themes of mortality\, sexuality\, personal transformation\, and the darker side of human nature. Rejecting the rational vision of life\, this artwork values the magic of the subconscious and the strange beauty in the unexpected\, the uncanny\, the disregarded\, and the unconventional.” \nRaised on the front range of Colorado\, Baade received her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago\, studied at the Florence Academy of Art in Italy\, and earned her MFA from the University of Delaware. She currently works in Tallahassee\, where she is a full Professor of Painting and Drawing at Florida State University. \nSince 2005\, Baade has had more than 30 solo exhibitions and participated in over 250 group exhibitions nationally and internationally. Her solo exhibits include shows at the Pensacola Art Museum (2022)\, Mesa Contemporary Museum of Art (2018)\, Museum of Contemporary Art in Jacksonville (2012)\, Delaware Contemporary (2007)\, La Luz de Jesus in Los Angeles (2018)\, and Ningbo Art Museum in China (2007). Her work has also been featured in notable group exhibitions at the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art\, the Harwood Museum in Taos\, the Instituto de America de Santa Fe in Granada\, Spain\, and the Centrum Promocji Kultury Warszawa Praga Południe in Poland. \nBaade’s accolades include a State of Florida Individual Artist Fellowship Award and a Delaware Division of the Arts Award for Established Artist in Painting. \n  \nEXHIBITION DETAILS\nCarrie Ann Baade: Mirror Worlds \nSeptember 6 – November 23\, 2024 \nMuseum of Art – DeLand \n600 N. SUMMARY:Yolanda Sánchez
DESCRIPTION:Cuban American artist Yolanda Sánchez brings her nature-inspired vision to this springtime exhibition at the Museum of Art – DeLand. Her colorful\, flowing textiles created in the traditional Korean Bojagi style are displayed alongside her vibrant\, floral inspired paintings. \nYolanda Sanchez\, Pleasure is a Measure of Freedom\, 2020-2021\, Silk organza fabric\, Bojagi construction\nNature\, in a very broad sense\, is Sánchez’s source of inspiration. In a non-intellectual way\, she translates and projects thoughts\, emotions and sensations into a moment of meeting – working with light\, color and mark and the materiality of the paint itself. She holds a space for the viewer – to enter\, to be there\, to have a moment of contemplation\, and to finish the work\, as it were. Subject and object are dissolved and replaced by a presence – a “presence without form.” There is no story to be told\, just simply a desire to awaken. \nHer study and training in calligraphy and background in dance inform her marks in her painted works. Calligraphy\, like dance\, is an interaction of movement and pause\, energy and stillness. Full of motion\, like individual dances of line and form\, the marks are a universal aesthetic\, conveying a life force\, independent of meaning or readability.  Rhythm\, harmony of opposing forces\, sense of space\, purity\, and mystery\, the gestural brushstroke – these qualities make up her process. \nSánchez’s painted work is influenced by poetry\, Eastern philosophy and the compositional structures of Chinese and Japanese classical ink painting\, generating visual images that integrate drawing\, writing and painting. Her interest is not in making art that looks Asian\, but in tapping into the energy or power that lies underneath these aesthetics\, maintaining nature as the central element and making work that is spiritually infused. Parallel to the work of other American artists such as Franz Kline\, Brice Marden and Cy Twombly\, she endeavors to tap into the dynamic liveliness of the brushstroke and capture its poetic content\, blurring the lines between language and visual representation. \nSánchez’s textiles\, painting with fabric\, are inspired by the Korean art form known as Bojagi. In its traditional form\, the stitching and seams create linear elements that are employed and are viewed as elements of the design\, especially with the use of translucent fabrics\, and are what distinguishes Bojagi from patchwork textiles found in other traditions. Her Bojagi-inspired textile work honors the tradition\, yet extends and interprets the basic structure of Bojagi to a form that is contemporary\, varying in medium and size\, and utilizing color compositions and stitching techniques less anchored to established methods. In effect\, her work is a synthesis of the practices of both painting and textile art. \nYolanda Sanchez\, Shanti\, 2021\, Silk organza fabric remnants\, Bojagi construction\nBorn in Cuba and raised in Miami\, Sánchez is a product of that “supersyncretic” (Benitez-Rojo) culture\, which is the Caribbean. At times not certain of the language she is speaking\, she says she improvises and remains open to other influences\, like a traveler roaming and crossing borders. \nFor Sánchez\, making art is a way of being present in the world; it is an act of attention. And through this attention\, she gives back and offers praise to the world.  As such\, her work is celebratory\, expanding\, opening\, and about offering pleasure. \nEXHIBITION DETAILS \nYolanda Sánchez: The Colour of Spring \nMuseum of Art – DeLand\, Downtown Gallery \n100 N.
