SUMMARY:The Florida Highwaymen
DESCRIPTION:At a time of profound social and economic change\, the Florida Highwaymen dared to navigate the American Dream. \nThe Florida Highwaymen were 26 self-taught African American artists who began painting in the 1950s and 60s\, capturing Florida’s landscapes in bold color. They sold their paintings along highways and door-to-door\, creating a legacy of creativity and perseverance that helped define Florida’s visual identity. Their depictions of royal poinciana trees\, marshes\, and coastal sunsets not only document Florida’s natural splendor but also stand as a testament to the artists’ determination and spirit in a period of profound social change. \nThis exhibition\, drawn from the esteemed Walker Collection\, is a rare opportunity to view works by all 26 recognized Highwaymen together. The Walker Collection represents one of the most comprehensive private holdings of Highwaymen paintings in the world. Assembled with care and vision\, the exhibition honors each artist’s contribution and preserves the spirit of this remarkable movement in Florida’s art history. \nEXHIBITION DETAILS \nThe Florida Highwaymen: Selections from the Walker Collection  \nJanuary 25 – March 29\, 2026 \nMuseum of Art DeLand  |  100 N. Woodland Blvd. DeLand\, Florida \nAdmission: Members Free  | Future Members $10 \n  \nImage: Mary Ann Carroll\, Old Blue Backwater\, Undated

SUMMARY:Taylor Robenalt
DESCRIPTION:Enter the enchanting world of ceramic artist Taylor Robenalt as  she showcases her anthropomorphic porcelain animal\, figure\, and flora sculptures in this mid-career retrospective at the Museum of Art – DeLand. \nThrough layered symbolism and narrative form\, Robenalt contributes to the evolving conversation surrounding sculptural ceramics\, bridging the disciplines of ceramics and sculpture in ways that expand how we understand both. Robenalt’s work highlights the power of storytelling\, where symbolic forms come together to create a larger narrative of change and transformation. \nA professor at Ringling College of Art and Design\, Robenalt creates work that is visually accessible and emotionally resonant\, encouraging viewers to engage intuitively. This exhibition offers space for reflection\, connecting audiences to themes of identity\, transformation\, and shared human experience. Viewers are encouraged to see their own evolving stories reflected in the work\, bridging personal experience with contemporary artistic dialogue. \nRobenalt holds a BFA in bronze casting and stone carving from Southern Methodist University and an MFA in ceramics from the University of Georgia.  She has been the subject of ten solo exhibits and has participated in over forty international group exhibits. \n  \n  \nImage: Taylor Robenalt\, Mama Bear and Cub Rising with Resilience (Detail)\, 2026\, Stoneware under glaze\, glaze\, luster\, and mixed media\, 58 in. x 62 in. x 48 in.\, Photo: Sorcha Augustine

SUMMARY:Artist Talk with Taylor Robenalt
DESCRIPTION:Join artist Taylor Robenalt for an engaging conversation exploring the narratives\, symbolism\, and material processes behind her intricate porcelain sculptures. Drawing from the long human tradition of storytelling\, Robenalt creates works that intertwine figures\, flora\, and fauna to reflect on personal experience\, animal behavior\, and humanity’s relationship with the natural world. \nThrough layered symbolism and carefully constructed forms\, her work bridges ceramics and sculpture\, expanding how we understand both disciplines while inviting viewers into stories of transformation and connection. Working primarily in porcelain\, Robenalt embraces the material’s delicate\, skin-like qualities to heighten the emotional resonance of her imagery\, where animals\, flowers\, and human forms become metaphors for loyalty\, freedom\, renewal\, and the cyclical nature of life. \nA professor at Ringling College of Art and Design\, Robenalt creates work that is visually accessible yet deeply reflective\, encouraging intuitive engagement and personal interpretation. This artist talk offers insight into her creative process and explores how storytelling through clay can connect individual experience to broader contemporary conversations about identity\, change\, and shared human experience. \nPlease note: Our galleries will not open early for this event due to a special event beforehand. \nAdmission: Free for Museum Members  |  $10 for Future Members
