Woodland Blvd. DeLand\, Florida 32720 \nReception begins at 5 p.m.\n \nArtist Talk begins at 5:30 p.m.\n \nThis presentation is part of a series exploring Black art\, artists\, and history in collaboration with the Festival of the Arts – DeLand. \nAdmission is free\, but RSVPs are required due to limited seating.  \n  \nCall (386) 734-4371 to reserve your space. He grew up in the Bronx where he spent his childhood. With his mother’s encouragement he pursued an art education\, attending The High School of Art and Design in 1977\, 1981 the State University of New York at New Paltz\, and then Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. He had a short stent at The Art Students League of New York as well. When paste-‐up and mechanical and marker comps jobs slowed in 1987 he worked as an Urban Park Ranger for the NYC Parks Department\, where he created murals for the Pelham Bay Environmental Nature Center. Two years later Weldon joined the NYPD. Weldon Ryan is the first African American to be appointed to the New York City Police Department Composite Artist Unit. \nAt the same time he served as one of NYC finest\, Weldon painted vigorously in his studio in the D.U.M.B.O art district in Brooklyn. Several of his commercial illustrations graced the cover and pages of magazines. After 18 years of service and solving numerous crimes with his drawing skills he retired from the NYPD on December 1\, 2004 and relocated with his family to Palm Coast\, Florida. \nCommitted to serving his community for several years Weldon coached youth football\, served on the PAL executive board\, and even started a team in Bunnell\, an underserved area in Flagler County. In 2010 he served as the president of the Flagler County Art League. In 2011 he earned the honor of the Gargiulo Art Foundation Flagler County’s Artist of the Year. In 2012 Weldon and his wife\, Richlin curated art shows at the PAC gallery at Bethune-‐Cookman University. And in 2013 they were instrumental in setting up the gallery system\, and curated art shows at the Yvonne Scarlett Golden Cultural and Educational Center. \nWeldon Ryan’s art is an “interfuse” of many techniques. He uses texture\, color\, and realistic rendering of the subject to create a unique interpretation of the world around him. He has the ability to master any medium he chooses\, be it oil\, acrylic\, watercolor\, pastels\, digital illustration\, photography\, or chavant clay. He uses the old masters’ techniques to create masterpieces.\nHis art has found a home in Palm Coast. Presently he studio at the Calypso Fine Art Gallery. and is exhibited in numerous venues through out the state of Florida. \nLearn more about Weldon Ryan and his work at: www.weldonryan.com \n  \nImage: Weldon Ryan\, BLM: Miami Carnival\, 2016\, Oil on canvas\, 60”x48”

SUMMARY:Where We Find Ourselves
DESCRIPTION:The Museum of Art – DeLand presents a powerful immersive art exhibition showcasing the work of early photographer Hugh Mangum. \nHugh Mangum\, Untitled 06\, 2021\, Archival Pigment Print\, 17 x 11½ in\nHugh Mangum was an itinerant self-taught photographer from Durham\, North Carolina\, from the early 1890s until his death in 1922 during the influenza pandemic. He traveled a rail circuit through North Carolina\, Virginia\, and West Virginia making photographs on glass plate negatives. Magnum used a variety of equipment during his career ranging from the “Penny Picture” camera which produced images the size of a penny to a Cirkut panorama camera capable of producing images 8″X 40″ without enlargement. \nMangum photographs are distinctive for the level of comfort exhibited by his subjects in front of the camera. Though the south of his era was marked by disenfranchisement\, segregation and inequality\, Mangum’s multiple-image\, glass plate negatives reveal the open-door policy of his studio and an artistic freshness unusual for the time period. \nAfter his death\, many of Mangum’s glass plate negatives were lost for almost fifty years\, stored in the tobacco pack house in Durham\, where he built his first darkroom. Fortunately the images that did survive – from more than 900 plates – were salvaged and moved to the Duke Special Collections Library\, where they were scanned and made digitally available. \nIn Where We Find Ourselves: The Photographs of Hugh Mangum\, 1897–1922\, some of the pictures have been scanned and enlarged using digital technology and printed in full color\, something unimaginable in Mangum’s time. The deterioration of the negatives caused by the ravages of time and the elements are preserved in the images and to see them in large scale underscores the magical story of their survival and lends a distinctive sense of modernity to the photographs. \n  \nExhibition Details\nWhere We Find Ourselves: The Photographs of Hugh Mangum\, 1897–1922 \nOn view April 9 – June 12\, 2022 \nMuseum of Art – DeLand \n100 N. Woodland Blvd. DeLand\, Florida 32720 \nAdmission: Members Free  |  Non-Members $5 \n  \nTop Image: Hugh Mangum\, Untitled 10\, 2021\, Archival Pigment Print\, 28 x 42 in

SUMMARY:Artist Talk & Reception with Michel Delgado
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special evening Gallery Talk with artist Michel Delgado. This presentation is part of a series exploring Black art\, artists\, and art history in collaboration with the Festival of the Arts – DeLand. \nEVENT DETAILS\nMeaningful Uncertainty: Artist Talk & Reception with Michel Delgado \nTuesday\, June 29\, 2021\, 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. \n600 N. Woodland Blvd. DeLand\, Florida 32720 \nAdmission is free\, but RSVPs are required at (386) 734-4371 due to limited seating. \nSTATEMENT FROM THE ARTIST\nGrowing up in Senegal\, on the west coast of Africa\, life and art shared the same space. They were indistinguishable. As a young boy in Dakar\, I learned that art is the tool I have for a direct and honest conversation with my own heart. Art always has been my rescuer\, my liberator – creatively\, emotionally\, spiritually. I’m a self-taught painter\, able to create in any media\, always painting work that is straightforward and personal\, work coming from a place within me that is constantly loud and growing. My work has been called naive. I fill my canvases with intense and basic colors\, crisply painted shapes\, and meticulous detail; I make work without conventional representational techniques; my work is free of metaphor\, irony and paradox. I paint straightforward narratives\, stories of my journey and memories of everyday experiences. Everything I create and paint comes through my relationship with the world around me\, my direct response to my fantasies\, my wonder and my spiritual growth. No journey in my life remains as straightforward as painting. \n  \nYou can learn more about the artist and his recent work at: micheldelgado.com \n  \nImage courtesy of the artist\, Michel Delgado.

SUMMARY:Adam Straus
DESCRIPTION:Out of Paradise is an exhibition of paintings by artist Adam Straus\, presenting and distorting idealized scenes of the natural world with incisive social commentary and a signature wry humor. \nAdam Straus\, Market Forces\, 2018\nSeductive and gloomily romantic with views of skylines and seascapes\, fields\, and mountains\, the paintings go beyond contemplation\, and articulate his concerns about the cruel reality of our planet. In his oils\, Straus represents the struggle and survival of mankind and mankind’s effect on nature. \nThis exhibition of Straus’s work will feature a collection of older pieces as well as more recent ones with a particularly timely relevance. Paintings displayed from his latest series contrast current events from 2016-2020 with an optimistic view of nature’s resilience. They juxtapose classic romantic landscapes of National Parks and images inspired by 19th-century artists with layers of recent newspaper coverage of politics\, racial tensions\, immigration\, human rights\, and other issues dominating current events. \nDon’t miss this eye-opening exhibition of the paintings of Adam Straus at our downtown gallery this summer. \nEXHIBITION DETAILS\nAdam Straus: Out of Paradise \nOn view June 18 – September 12\, 2021 \n100 N. Woodland Blvd. DeLand\, Florida 32720 \nAdmission: Members Free | Non-Members $5 \n  \nABOUT THE ARTIST\nAdam Straus is an American artist based in Riverhead\, New York. Starting as a photographer and sculptor in the the late ’70s and early ’80s\, he began making small paintings in 1986 of nocturnal landscapes inspired by his surroundings in north Florida. These paintings were often instilled with a dark humor\, social commentary\, and framed in the sheet lead he had been using on sculpture. \nHis technique has evolved throughout the years\, but always with a marked personality. In framing the paintings in lead or steel he adds a unique touch\, and more recently\, his pixelating technique evokes the particulate matter suspended in the air and water. \nStraus has exhibited extensively throughout the United States and internationally. His works can be seen in such collections as City of Orlando\, FL\, Mead Art Museum\, Amherst\, MA\, The Art Museum at F.I.U.\, Miami\, FL\, American Express\, Fidelity Investments\, Boston\, Lavandoo Corporation\, Geneva\, Switzerland\, among others. Straus received his B.A. at Miami-Dade Community College\, Miami and a B.S. in Mathematics at the University of Florida\, Gainesville. He later received his M.F.A. from Florida State University\, Tallahassee. Since 1990\, he has lived and worked in New York. \n  \nTop Image: Adam Straus\, Out of Paradise: After Heade\, 2018\, Oil and graphite on newspaper transferred and adhered to wood\, framed in lead\, 34 x 50 x 2 in.

SUMMARY:Second Chance
DESCRIPTION:Artist\, Teacher\, and Visual Art Curriculum Specialist\, Bryce Hammond presents a powerful and timely solo exhibition created in collaboration with students over the past 7 years. \nBryce Hammond\, Steak Sandwich\, 2019\, Acrylic and Polyurethane on panel\, 20 1/8 x 26 1/8 in.\nOriginally conceptualized around a body of work entitled “Beautiful and Broken”\, this unique exhibition took a U-turn when the 2020 pandemic brought the collaboration to a halt. Content and context had to be rediscovered. “Beautiful and Broken” had to be re-imagined\, re-purposed\, and re-built through the lens of a SECOND CHANCE. \nWith artworks including teacher calendars\, student hall passes\, and architectural subject matter\, Hammond went back to unfinished work and repurposed\, recycled\, and re-imagined the outcomes. He revisited unfinished multimedia projects and completed them. He went to the restaurants he had recently designed\, now closed due to COVID-19\, and pulled all of the work to show in a re-contextualized setting. Everything in this exhibition\, including the artist himself\, aims to explore a SECOND CHANCE. \n  \nWhen: February 26 – May 2\, 2021 \nWhere: 600 N. Woodland Blvd. DeLand\, Florida 32720 \nAdmission: $5 Non-Members | Members Free \nPlease note: Due to ongoing COVID-19 precautions\, there will be no opening reception for this exhibition. \n  \nAbout the Artist\nBryce Hammond has been making artwork on a professional level for 26 years. He has been a Middle School\, High School and College Art Professor for the past 12. In 2013\, Hammond brought his MFA thesis Installation/Exhibition\, Transient Motel\, to Alan Avery Art Company in Atlanta. SUMMARY:Knowing What I Like
DESCRIPTION:George S. Bolge is not the kind of collector who “collects for profit pure and simple\, who buys works of art in wholesale lots\, only to stash them away in a warehouse where they have risen in value.” Rather\, our former CEO (and current Board of Trustees member) collects art for art’s sake\, seeing each acquisition as “the record of a vivid experience\, either a long pursuit or a struggle\, in which mounting desire has conquered prudence and economy.” \nHenri-Cartier Bresson\, Behind the Gare Saint-Lazara\, 1932\, Gelatin silver print\, 14 ½ x 9 ¾ in\nWith few exceptions\, most of the works in Bolge’s collection are small to medium in scale\, but covering an extensive artistic scope in terms of cultural and aesthetic content\, technique\, style\, and media. The art represented in this impressive exhibition was assembled over 40 years of personal interactions with artists – those with both national and international reputations\, and those whose talents have yet to be discovered. Familiar names include M.C. Escher\, Henri-Cartier Bresson\, Denis Smith\, and Arnold Newman. \nIn Bolge’s words\, “This exhibition is an attempt to select\, from as personal point of view as possible\, a group of painters\, sculptors\, and photographers who have given me – each in his or her own way – experiences that are pleasurable.  All of these are for me unique\, because each one makes a visual statement quite of their own making.” \nEXHIBITION DETAILS\nKnowing What I Like: The Private Collection of George S. Bolge \nJanuary 15\, 2021 – March 14\, 2021 \n100 N. SUMMARY:Renato Rampolla
DESCRIPTION:With a humanist understanding of a group so many choose not to notice\, Renato Rampolla is a Florida-based artist best known for his “Dignity” series of photographs – a compilation of portraits of the people he encounters\, most of them homeless\, while walking the streets with his camera. \nRenato Rampolla\, Doug\, 2017\, Archival pigment print\, 23 x 23 in\nFrom roadsides to over-passes\, makeshift camps to alleyways\, Rampolla hears their stories and photographs their telling faces in cities across the country\, with the artistic objective of capturing the light within. This eye-opening photographic exhibition serves to articulate the subject of human dignity: not just the dignity of the homeless\, but of all of us\, and our fundamental needs of belonging\, love\, respect\, and kindness. \nThe son of figurative artist Frank Rampolla\, Renato Rampolla evokes the heavy aspect of his father’s paintings while observing his subjects through the lens of humanity. \n“I want my viewer to connect eye-to-eye with [the homeless]\, with their soul. I use a small lens and get less than a foot away because\, to me\, every wrinkle captured tells a story\,” he says. “I want you to feel what they feel. With a bit of understanding\, people can build on empathy and compassion.” \n \nEXHIBITION DETAILS\nRenato Rampolla: Dignity – The Light Within\n \nJanuary 8\, 2021 – March 28\, 2021 \nMuseum of Art – DeLand \n600 N.
