DESCRIPTION:While in DeLand\, artist Carlie Trosclair created latex castings inside the historic Dutton House as part of her exhibition\, all the lives we ever lived. Built in 1911\, the house was recently purchased and is currently undergoing renovations to restore and preserve its original features. Through her castings\, Trosclair not only honors the legacy of the Dutton House but also revitalizes its historic elements\, contributing uniquely to the restoration process. \nArtist Carlie Trosclair\nAs a community\, we are grappling with how to balance the preservation of our historic landmarks with the challenges posed by a rapidly growing population. Trosclair’s work serves as a catalyst for important conversations about how we can navigate this issue. \nHow do we balance growth and preservation in DeLand? DESCRIPTION:The Museum of Art – DeLand is proud to partner with Stetson University’s Institute for Water and Environmental Resilience (IWER) to host an Earth Day panel and art installation\, Reflections on Water: An Artistic and Scientific Dialogue. The night will be underscored by a breathtaking\, immersive video projection by artist Luciana Abait. “The Glass Wall\,” will displayed on the outside of the front wall of the Aquatic Center building. \nThe panel consists of Martha Underriner of the Museum of Art – DeLand as moderator\, artist Luciana Abait\, Dr. Jason Evans of the Institute for Water and Environmental Resilience\,  Stephanie Liskey of Sailforth Productions\, and Brenda Wells of the Florida Springs Council. \n \nLuciana Abait is a multi-media artist\, originally from Argentina. Her work focuses on climate change\, environmental fragility\, and their impact on immigrants. Her work\, “The Glass Wall” draws attention to the global water crisis\, representing the abilities and limits of humanity’s power to control nature. DESCRIPTION:Born in Buenos Aires\, Argentina\, Luciana Abait invites viewers to re-imagine nature through her manipulated photographic landscapes\, installations\, and photo-sculptures\, exploring climate change\, environmental fragility\, and their impacts on immigrants in particular. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbait’s work has been shown widely in the United States\, Europe\, Latin America\, and Asia in solo shows in galleries\, museums\, and international art fairs. She has completed numerous corporate and public art commissions\, among them “Vistas”\, a 24 feet mural commissioned by Miami-Dade Art in Public Places and “Hong Kong Windows”\, commissioned by Swire Properties in Hong Kong.​ She was also part of The Billboard Creative (her artwork displayed on a Hollywood billboard)\, Projecting Possibilities\, a video projection onto the street in Culver City and LUMINEX in Los Angeles\, where her 34-foot-high immersive video installation “Agua” was projected onto a historic cultural monument: the Petroleum Securities Building in Downtown Los Angeles. \nAbait’s works are held in private\, public and corporate collections from the United States\, Europe\, Latin America and East Asia. She is the recipient of the 2016 Santa Monica Individual Artist Fellowship Award\, the 2022 “Art Lives Here” Award by the Geffen Playhouse\, the 2023 Counter Image printing grant\, and the 2024 L.L. DESCRIPTION:Join us for an artist talk and meet & greet with Mateo Blanco\, where the Colombian-American artist will discuss his recent piece\, Born of Two Lands Flag\, currently on display at the Museum. \nThrough this piece\, Blanco invites the public to reflect on the importance of caring for our environment\, honoring our heritage and embracing the complexity of our identities. Crafted from textiles with natural dye from the Mata Raton Tree\, Almendro Tree\, coconut\, cilantro and achiote\, the flag is an organic palette that connects Blanco to his Colombian roots\, exploring his unique identity as a Colombian-American. \n  \nABOUT THE ARTIST \nMateo Blanco was born in Miami in 1981 and began his formal training in fine art in Medellin\, Colombia\, where he studied under Débora Arango Pérez\, the artist immortalized on the country’s 2\,000-peso bill. Blanco’s studies include goldsmithing and jewelry. He holds a B.A. from Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton. Blanco is also a talented opera performer\, who sang for President George H.W. Bush in 2003. DESCRIPTION:Camp Create at the Museum of Art – DeLand is back for Summer 2025! Our 6-week summer camp program will be available for 6-12 year olds from June 9th – July 25th. \nThis summer our Campers will explore all of the art filled adventures that they can dream of! Each week a new theme will ignite their creativity and imaginations. Campers will be inspired to create 2D and 3D projects and will enjoy a wide variety of age appropriate hands-on art experiences\, excitement\, and fun! Campers will have two sessions each day and work on multiple art projects each week. We take breaks throughout the day for snacks\, lunch\, and games. We invite our Campers to bring their imaginations\, create memories to last a lifetime\, and discover the adventures that are waiting for you when you make art!  \nThe themes change each week so Campers may register for more than one session. Children will be placed in small groups to ensure that they receive personalized attention. No previous art-making experience necessary!  Visits to the Museum’s galleries will enhance the educational experience and provide additional motivation and inspiration. \nCamp Create 2025 Schedule\nWeek #1 Pop Art Palooza Week\n \nJune 9th-13th              \nJoin us for a week full of vivacious color where students can make art that pops and boldly express their creativity! Inspired by iconic pop artists like Andy Warhol\, Idelle Weber\, and Roy Lichtenstein\, students will create eye-catching artwork that experiment with repeating patterns\, unique color combinations\, and various graphic styles. \nWeek #2 Glow Week\n \nJune 16th-20th\n \nIlluminate any dim space with art that glows! Students will experience a week filled with black lights\, glow in the dark paint\, and lively colors. Black light disco balls\, luminous lava lamps\, glowing galaxies\, and neon tie-dye shirts are just some of the many mesmerizing projects they will create this week. \nWeek#3 3D Art Week\n \nJune 23rd-27th\n \nJump out of the 2-dimensional page and carve\, sculpt\, and mold works of\nart that have depth. This week\, students will experience hands-on how 3-dimensional art forms fill space\, and interact with light\, shadow\, and perspective. Campers will be using air dry clay\, carving tools\, and papier-mâché to make projects such as relief sculptures\, assemblages\, and interactive pieces such as customized building sets. The work of sculptural artists like Alexander Calder\, Yayoi Kusama\, and Ruth Asawa will be referenced for inspiration. \nWeek #4 Palette & Pencil Week\n \nJuly 7th-11th\n \nThroughout Palette & Pencil Week students will be immersed in a variety of painting and drawing techniques and styles! From sketching with pencil and charcoal to painting with watercolor and acrylics\, they will learn foundational skills like shading\, blending\, and perspective while exploring their own artistic voice. Students will draw inspiration from artists like M.C Escher\, Charly Palmer\, and Vija Celmins to create their artwork. \nWeek #5 Comic Craze Week\n \nJuly 14th-18th\n \nComic Craze is an exciting\, imagination-driven week where campers become comic artists and storytellers. Students will learn the basics of comic creation\, focusing on many aspects of comic art such as: speech bubbles\, character design\, art styles (classic comic strips and manga)\, visual storytelling techniques\, panel layouts\, and dynamic action scenes. By the end of the week\, students will have their own thrilling mini-comic or graphic story to share! \nWeek #6 Urban Expressions Week\n \nJuly 21st-25th\n \nDream big and imagine your art on big city walls this week! Students will be introduced to graffiti\, stenciling\, murals\, and sticker art\, decorate skate decks\, and have the opportunity to design and “tag” their own creations. Join us this week and learn more about the styles and techniques used by street and mural artists in urban settings\, such as Emily Ding and Case Maclaim\, and how they bring life to our cities. \nCamp Create 2025 Registration Details\n\nRegistration begins March 1 \, 2025. She recently graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Digital Arts with Music and Entrepreneurship minors from Stetson University and has been teaching art to youth for almost 4 years\, starting at the Gateway Center for the Arts as a Summer Camp Art Teacher. She has worked at the Hand Art Center as a Gallery Assistant\, and now loves to help implement educational art programming within our local communities for people of all ages through the Museum of Art – DeLand. Jodi-Ann also serves as Vocal Director at Identity Church Daytona\, and teaches voice and piano with Beachside Music Lessons and Therapy. As a multidisciplinary artist\, Jodi-Ann adores performing and producing music\, writing poetry and songs\, leading worship\, portrait and nature photography\, exhibiting her portrait paintings\, and running her Etsy store. In her spare time\, she enjoys reading\, spending time in nature\, and making memories with her loved ones. Jodi-Ann will be at camp every week as an administrator.  \nAshley Hess\nAshley Hess is the art teacher at Heritage Middle School where she has been teaching since 2021. Prior to teaching in Volusia County\, she worked as Museum Educator at the Louvre Abu Dhabi. She grew up in Georgia where she received a bachelor’s in Sequential Art from the Savannah College of Art and Design. She also holds a Masters of Archeology\, Art History\, and Museum Studies from Paris-Sorbonne University. She specializes in ceramics\, watercolor\, acrylic\, pen and ink\, as well as mandala designs. Ashley will be teaching Weeks 5 & 6 at Camp Create. \nGwen Petersohn\nGwen Petersohn is a retired educator of 37 years in Volusia County. During those years she taught high school 2D and 3D Art\, Elementary Art\, General Education (grades 3rd and 5th)\, and held various positions in Exceptional Student Education. Gwen has a master’s degree in Varying Exceptionalities\, Elementary Education and Studio Art\, and is also an Artist\, Illustrator\, Author\, and CrossFit Coach. Her favorite medium to work in is acrylic paint and she loves to work with her hands\, taking inspiration from the old saying: “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” Gwen will be teaching Week 1 at Camp Create. \nKatina Hurst\nKatina Hurst is an Art Teacher at Freedom Elementary\, and has been teaching for 7 years\, 2 of them being in art. Art has been a lifelong passion of Katina’s\, and she feels so lucky to be able to share that passion with students. In her spare time\, Katina creates most of her own artwork using watercolors. When she is not teaching or creating\, she spends time with her family\, including painting her two young children. Katina is very excited to be teaching Weeks 2 & 5 at Camp Create.  \nKristan Brinley \nKristan Kinsella-Brinley currently teaches at DeLand High school in grades 9 through 12. She teaches Photography\, Studio Art\, Drawing and Painting\, Portfolio Development\, and Advanced Placement Studio Art classes. She has been living her dream as an art teacher since 2003. Kristan graduated from Syracuse University with a master’s degree in art education and began teaching elementary school art and later moved into teaching at the high school level. She spent her summers teaching art camp at the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse for 8 years and is excited to get back to teaching summer art camp here in DeLand for her 5th year for Week 6 of Camp Create! \nTiffany Warren\nTiffany Warren is the elementary art teacher at Champion Elementary School\, and has been working with Volusia County Schools for 10 years\, with the end of the school year marking her 5th year teaching art. She values inclusivity of all students-regardless of ability\, encouraging everyone to shine and find a love within art! Art is one of her greatest joys and her biggest passion is to spread that joy to others and see them grow within the art field. While not teaching and creating\, she enjoys spending time with her husband and three children at home or traveling. Tiffany will be teaching Weeks 3 & 4 at Camp Create. \nKim Martinez \nIf there is one thing that describes the persona of Kim Martinez\, it is her desire to create. This desire was instilled from an early age through drawing the cartoons from the inside of matchbook covers; then graduating to pastels in her teens and early twenties\, and then discovering acrylic painting. Her passion to find creativity in almost every aspect of her life has led to a diverse artistic background. Kim has an AA in Fashion Merchandising from LA Trade Tech and a BA equivalent in Education from St. Leo’s University and her professional background encompasses several creative fields including: art leadership\, show production prop builder/stagehand\, muralist/decorative artist\, stained glass artesian\, life-casting sculptor\, arts and crafts instructor- with children\, adults\, and special needs individuals. Kim is a mostly self-taught artist and has worked in a variety of mediums\, but her true love is hand-building/sculpting with polymer and air-dry clay. Her most recent artistic endeavors are hosting her private Facebook clay group and being a member and exhibitor at ArtWorks Deland gallery\, where she sells her work and teaches a variety of clay projects. We are excited to have Kim as a teacher for Week 3 of Camp Create.  \nNicole Steele\nNicole Steele has been a teacher for 16 years and currently teaches Art at Starke Elementary in Deland.  She has a passion for creating many forms of art and encouraging her students to explore all media. Nicole was recently named as a recipient of the 2025 Crystal Apple Award by the DeLand & Greater West Volusia Chamber of Commerce. Nicole and her loving husband Lance have two amazing children\, Mason who is 21 and Maddie who is 17 and attends Deland High School. Nicole moved to Florida 3 years ago from Tennessee with her family and they love to explore everything Florida has to offer! Nicole will be joining us as a teacher for Weeks 1 and 2 of Camp Create. \nTamera Dillen \nTamera Dillen has been teaching life skills and art for 12 years\, the last 3 years exclusively focusing on art education. Tamera holds a Bachelor’s degree in Interdisciplinary Studies majoring in Education and Art from the University of Central Florida. She loves guiding students through self-expression using various forms of art. For Tamera\, it’s rewarding to see her students explore their art skills and art making processes. Spending time outdoors\, gardening\, hiking\, enjoying concerts\, going to festivals\, and creating 2D art like landscapes are all things Tamera loves. Tamera will be teaching with us for Week 4 of Camp Create. \nJarobi Watts\, Camp Create Program Assistant \nJarobi Watts is a part of Stetson University’s Class of 2025 and has spent the last 4 years earning his Bachelors of Music with an Outside Field in Russian\, East European and Eurasian Studies. He began playing his first instrument\, the double bass (also known as the upright bass)\, at the age of eleven in middle school. Jarobi then started learning more instruments such as the electric bass\, acoustic guitar\, electric guitar\, and exploring the genres of classical\, jazz\, gospel\, rock\, soul\, and acoustic music. Not only is Jarobi a multi-faceted musician\, but he also has been educating young musicians and performing artists over the past few years in local schools and music programs. Jarobi is a staff member at the Museum of Art – DeLand\, usually assisting with facilities and exhibitions. He is excited to join us again this summer as the Camp Create Program Assistant. \n\n\nCamp Policies\n\n\nCancellations and Refunds \n\n\n\n\n\nNo fees will be returned or credits issued for failure to attend.\nThere will be no make-up classes due to a student’s illness\, unanticipated travel or other reasons not the responsibility of the Museum of Art – DeLand.\nIf a class is canceled\, students will be notified at least two (2) days prior to the date of class\, and tuition will be refunded. The Museum reserves the right to substitute teachers as needed.\nA refund will be issued minus a $25 processing fee for cancellation up to 7 days prior to beginning of the session.  No refund will be issued after the 7 day deadline.\n\n\n\n\n\nCheck In/Check Out \n\n\n\n\n\nStudents cannot be dropped off more than 15 minutes before the start of class and students are to be picked up promptly after the end of class. WE THANK YOU FOR UNDERSTANDING. \nJoin us for a presentation on “Biodiversity and Environmental Justice” by the internationally distinguished Stetson University Professor\, biodiversity scholar\, poet\, artist\, and steering member of the National Environmental Justice Institute and the Center for Sustainable Communities\, Dr. Rajni Shankar-Brown. \nThis talk is presented alongside the exhibit\, A Life in the Wild by renowned nature photographer Thomas D. Mangelsen. Dr. Shankar-Brown will not only highlight research but also explore the interconnectedness of our planet through storytelling\, poetry\, and song. The presentation will emphasize the importance of protecting biodiversity as a cornerstone of environmental justice. It will also delve into the profound ways human activities have disrupted ecosystems and upset the delicate balance of nature\, both globally and locally. This talk invites us to reflect on our shared responsibility to embrace sustainable practices\, fostering a healthier planet and preserving the rich biodiversity of our world for generations to come. \nAfter her talk\, Dr. Shankar-Brown will be available for a book signing with her collection of poetry Tuluminous\, which supports youth experiencing homelessness—while lifting ecojustice and the arts.
