A panel of judges curated a selection of the submitted poems (one poem per piece of artwork) to be published in the 2020 Poetic Visions Anthology and displayed next to the piece in our corresponding art exhibition. \nFrom August 21 – November 15\, the museum-going public will have a chance to view and vote on the selected poems alongside the artwork they represent. On November 20\, the Museum will host a limited-admission\, Awards Ceremony reception to announce the winner and toast all participants. SUMMARY:2020 Poetic Visions Competition
DESCRIPTION:The Museum of Art DeLand\, Creative Happiness Institute\, and MainStreet Art & Culture Slam of DeLand proudly present The 2020 Poetic Visions poetry contest. Poetic Visions is an Ekphrastic poetry competition. All submissions will be poems inspired or prompted by 34 different pieces of artwork on display at The Museum of Art DeLand. All submissions will be curated by a panel of five esteemed judges and one poem will be selected to represent each of the 34 works of art. Poets may submit up to 3 different poems (3 different works of art as prompts). The winners will then be selected by the general public\, who will be able to view the submissions right alongside the artwork in a special exhibit and then cast a vote for their favorites. Entry is free. Selected submissions will be eligible for inclusion in the 2020 Poetic Visions Anthology. \nEligibility\nEligibility is open to poets of all ages and residing anywhere. However\, as personal appearances are mandatory for participation\, it is suggested that only poets residing in areas that are a reasonable commute to The Museum of Art DeLand enter this competition. That includes the counties of Volusia\, Lake\, Flagler\, Seminole\, Orange\, and areas in proximity. \nFormat\nAll submissions will be done using Microsoft Word (no PDFs or Google docs) and will use a page size of 11 inches by 17 inches. Use an Arial font of no less than 22 and no more than 24. Poems will be no more than 37 lines including title and spacing. Keep your margins consistent- at least one inch is suggested. Submissions will consist of 3 pages only\, sent individually for each artwork. Submissions must be original and by one individual. Be sure to proofread your poem before submitting. Do not submit attachments from online clouds or anything requiring a sign in. \nPage one will have the poet’s contact information- name\, email address\, and telephone number. Please include a short bio on the first page as well. SUMMARY:Hollywood Stills
DESCRIPTION:From the very inception of the motion picture industry\, still images have accompanied the release and marketing of feature films\, drawing-in customers to the local “movie houses” with their evocative images and studies of the stars. From the late silent film era to more modern times\, artful and dramatically composed photographs were used to capture the essence of the features they highlighted. Displayed in glass cases outside the theaters\, these pictures were sometimes used in local print advertising\, as well as accompanying spicy stories in magazines like Photoplay and Modern Screen. \nMany of the artists were the movies’ own camera operators and crew members\, excellent still photographers who augmented their roles as on-set documentarians. Not only were specific moments from the actual films captured\, but also “behind the scenes” images of the cast\, crew\, and set. \nThis fascinating exhibition contains 200 of the best examples of these cinematic advertising images. Although these photographs were specifically created for promotional purposes\, they display a fine art sensibility\, demonstrating expert technical knowledge and often a keen sense of drama and composition. Many of the photographs in this collection were produced anonymously\, but others represent the work of more eminent Hollywood photographers such as Edward Steichen\, George Hurrell\, and Robert Coburn. \nSome of Hollywood’s most memorable movies are encapsulated in the dramatic impressions these photographs convey. DESCRIPTION:In this 8-week class\, beginner and intermediate students will learn how to paint an oil landscape using photographs as a reference from start to finish. \nClass format will consist of demonstration\, group and individual instruction with a focus on color mixing\, brush techniques\, composition\, focal point\, and perspective. Students will gain an understanding of oil painting techniques and discover how to bring their inner feelings and individual artistic vision to the canvas. Photographs are used only as a starting point and John will teach you how to embellish the scene with color\, lighting and by adding other elements to personalize the image. \nAbout the Artist:\nJohn’s early training was completed at the Swain School of Design in New \nJohn Gamache\, Self Portrait\, Oil on Linen\nBedford\, Massachusetts and at Southeastern Massachusetts University. He spent many years after working as a freelance illustrator and designer for advertising agencies\, publishing companies\, and corporations. Within the last several years he has returned to fine art\, showing his personal works to the public. He considers his artistic schooling to have been “intensely” classical\, and acknowledges that the creation of art is intertwined with his life. \nJohn works in a traditional style of painting\, but is unconventional in the application and type of surface materials he uses in some of his works. DESCRIPTION:Featuring a selection of large-scale artworks accompanied by videos documenting the artist’s creative process\, this exquisite exhibition is among the first to introduce Kirsty Mitchell’s fantastical photographs to American museum audiences. \nWonderland: Photographs by Kirsty Mitchell will be on view at the Museum of Art – DeLand through April 26\, 2020 at 100 N. Woodland Blvd. DeLand\, Florida 32720. Admission is free for all members\, and $10 for non-members. \n \nA trained fashion designer who has worked with international labels such as Alexander McQueen and Hussein Chalayan\, Mitchell created elaborate costumes and props and collaborated with hair and make-up artist Elbie Van Eeden to compose and then photograph astonishingly beautiful\, fantastical scenes in the lush local landscape of her childhood home in rural England. \nBut the sublime beauty of Mitchell’s fairy tale world belies a profound heartbreak that compelled her to create it in the first place. As Mitchell explains: \n\nKirsty Mitchell\, The Pure Blood of a Blossom\, 2014\, Photograph\n‘Wonderland’ began in the summer of 2009\, born of grief for my mother Maureen\, who died seven months earlier in November 2008. Back then as I sat in my kitchen sewing the first rough costume\, nothing could have prepared me for the five-year journey that lay ahead. What started as a desperate distraction from the pain of reality\, led to a dramatic turning point in my career\, and consequently\, my entire life… \nKirsty Mitchell\, Gaia\, The Birth of an End\, 2013\, Photograph\nMitchell’s mother was an English teacher\, who spent over 30 years inspiring generations of children with her stories from classic literature\, folklore and plays. In April 2008\, she was diagnosed with a brain tumor that left her unable to return to her home to England from the small French village where she and her husband had retired. Instead of a funeral filled with her friends\, ex-pupils and the community she inspired\, the family had to make do with a small gathering\, which left Mitchell heartbroken and determined to do something unforgettable that would honor her mother’s memory forever. \nWhat began as a small summer photography project grew into the idea of creating a storybook without words\, dedicated to Mitchell’s mother. None of the pictures were a recreation of stories that already existed. Instead\, they were a blur of colors and settings inspired by the faded illustrations of Mitchell’s childhood books\, mixed with memories\, grief\, and her newfound spiritual connection to nature. \nTwo years into her entirely self-funded project (which utilized no stylists\, designers\, or huge teams of assistants)\, Mitchell decided to leave her full-time fashion career behind. Moving forward\, she would dedicate her life to completing the project and realizing her dream of producing the book. \nKirsty Mitchell on location in 2013\nWonderland continued for another three years and was completed in November 2014\, culminating in 74 photographs. After a number of offers from publishers\, in September 2015\, Mitchell decided to walk away from every contract and instead launch her own Kickstarter campaign in order to make the most beautiful book possible without any compromises. The campaign went on to become the most successfully crowdfunded photobook ever made\, raising over £334\,000 in just 28 days and was completely sold out within two months. In light of overwhelming public demand\, eight months later\, a second edition was released which now continues to sell around the world. \nThe series eventually garnered international media attention\, being recognized by Harper’s Bazaar\, Vogue Italia\, The Royal Photographic Society\, BBC News\, The Guardian\, and The Telegraph to name a few. DESCRIPTION:Daniel Greene\, (American\, 1934) \nIn a striking balance of truth and tradition\, the work of Daniel Greene immortalizes moments of familiar reality with the discipline and reverence of classic portraiture. \nDaniel Greene\, Caroline\, 1997\, Oil on canvas\, 22” x 16”\nGreene was born in 1934 in Cincinnati\, Ohio. He studied at the Art Academy of Cincinnati (1944 -46)\, and the Art Students League of New York (1953 -55). In a career now spanning seven decades\, Greene first started making portraits as a street artist in 1950s Miami\, quickly embracing and committing to the pastel art form. Although most of his commissioned pieces are oil paintings\, his personal work has always oscillated between the two mediums. \nConsidered by the Encyclopedia Britannica to be the foremost pastelist in the United States\, his dazzling work has helped to seal the medium’s reputation as equally suitable as oil painting for serious\, accomplished work. In 1983\, the Pastel Society of America elected him to the Pastel Hall of Fame\, and 20 years later\, the Pastel Society of the West Coast named Mr. Greene a Pastel Laureate. In 1989\, his work represented the United States at the first International Biennial of Pastel in San Quentin\, France. \nDaniel Greene\, Ceremony\, 2014\, Pastel on wood\, 32” x 50”\nWhether he’s examining familiar spaces such as the New York City subway\, or distilling the heightened drama of carnivals and auctions\, Greene achieves a visual formality that is both technically and conceptually masterful. \nDaniel Greene\, Antiques Dealer with Folk Art\, 2010\, Oil on linen\, 62” x 52”\nGreene’s paintings and pastels are represented in over 700 public and private collections in the United States and abroad. His portrait subjects have included leaders of Government\, Banking\, Education and Industry. Some of his sitters include First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt\, Ayn Rand\, Astronaut Walter Schirra\, William Randolph Hearst\, “Wendy’s” founder Dave Thomas\, Composer Alan Menken\, Bryant Gumbel\, and Bob Schieffer of CBS News. His recent exhibition\, “Subway Paintings” at the New York Transit Museum at Grand Central Terminal was the inaugural event in the centennial year of the New York subway. \nGreene lives and works in New York State\, teaching popular workshops each summer from his studio in North Salem. In the past\, he worked as an instructor of painting at the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League of New York. DESCRIPTION:Will Barnet (American\, 1911 – 2012) \n“Memory plays an important part in the idea of immortality. In the end\, all we have left is memory.” Very few artists have exhibited such a depth of feeling for personal and family history as Will Barnet. \nBarnet was born in 1911 in Beverly\, Massachusetts. He was the son of a frequently-absent Russian immigrant father\, and a mother who was withdrawn and melancholy. Barnet often found himself alone as a child\, a state which was typically reflected in his drawings. His first exposure to art came in the form of the local cemetery in Beverly – its colonial tombstones carved with skulls and other funereal images. “These were mementos of what had taken place\,” he recalled. “At the age of 10 or 12\, I discovered that being an artist would give me an ability to create something which would live on after death.” \nAs Museum of Art – DeLand CEO\, George S. Bolge remarks: \nHis pictorial form is the outward manifestation of his attitude toward life.  It tells us that aloneness is the central human condition\, and that man’s salvation and greatness can only come about by confronting and surmounting the pain of that loneliness.  But it must be done with fortitude and equanimity. \nWill Barnet\, Child’s World\,  1945-7\, Oil on canvas\, 28 x 32 in.\nBarnet trained at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts School and the Art Students League New York. By 1936\, he had established himself as a professional printer and the youngest instructor of graphic arts to ever hold a faculty position at the Arts Students League. He later taught art at such prestigious American schools as Yale University and Cornell University. \nBy the 1940s\, Barnet was a renowned painter\, printmaker\, and prolific graphic artist. His style changed considerably at different points in his career. His earliest works were influenced by expressionism; followed by abstract works in the 1950s and 1960s. From the mid-1960s\, Barnet ranged between a simplified form of realism and visionary symbolism in his paintings and prints. In 2003\, Barnet changed his approach yet again\, returning to abstraction and reengaging with the bold shapes\, vivid colors\, and dynamic compositions of his 1950s paintings. \nBarnet’s work has been exhibited in prominent museums and galleries across the United States and Canada and is included in many important collections – including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Guggenheim Museum in New York; the Boston Museum of Fine Arts; the National Gallery of Art; the Whitney Museum of American Art; the Museum of Modern Art\, New York; the Philadelphia Museum of Art; and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. \nWill Barnet\, Untitled Drawing\, 1943\, Gouache on paper\, 15 x 10 3/4 in.\nBarnet was the recipient of numerous awards\, including the first Artist’s Lifetime Achievement Award Medal given on the occasion of the National Academy of Design’s 175th anniversary; the College Art Association’s Lifetime Achievement Award; the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Art’s Lippincott Prize; and the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters’ Childe Hassam Prize. He was awarded the 2011 National Medal of Arts by President Barack Obama. In 2012\, France conferred on Barnet the insignia of Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters. \nBarnet died in 2012 at the age of 101. DESCRIPTION:John Gamache\, Rue de l’Eglise Chauvincourt-Provemont\, France\, Oil on linen\, 12 x 24″ \nJohn Gamache\, Self portrait\, No date\, Oil on linen\, 16″ x 20″\nOn Thursday\, September 26\, 2019\, join us as artist John Gamache shows some of his original finished oil paintings\, assemblages\, and a few new works in progress. He’ll discuss portrait\, still life\, and landscape painting\, describing his process and sharing thoughts on how he works with each genre. \nJohn’s early training was completed at the Swain School of Design in New Bedford\, Massachusetts and at Southeastern Massachusetts University. He spent many years after working as a freelance illustrator and designer for advertising agencies\, publishing companies\, and corporations. Within the last several years he has returned to fine art\, showing his personal works to the public. He considers his artistic schooling to have been “intensely” classical\, and acknowledges that the creation of art is intertwined with his life. “I guess you could say that I’m in ‘school’ every day\,” he jokes. “And yes\, I suppose I will graduate someday.” \nJohn Gamache\, Finally Home\, No date\, Oil on linen\, 16″ x 20″\nJohn works in a traditional style of painting\, but is unconventional in the application and type of surface materials he uses in some of his works.
