Woodland Blvd. DeLand\, Florida 32720 \nAdmission: Members Free  |  Non-Members $5 \nRSVP required at (386) 734-4371 \n  \nABOUT THE ARTIST\nConsidered one of the most complex and lucid artists of his generation following the Cuban tradition of narrative symbolist painting\, Reynier Llanes was born in Pinar del Rio\, Cuba in 1985. He attended the city’s school of art (Instructores de Arte) and was tutored by one of the country’s most recognized realist artists\, Juan Miguel Suárez. In 2005\, he moved to Havana where he continued his studies and collaborated with various artists. The capital was a thriving mecca of art and culture\, and the museums the grounds for inspiration. \nIn 2007\, LIanes moved to the United States\, first settling in Naples\, Florida. There\, he introduced his work in a major exhibition entitled “Strange Visitor” at the Kapo Maestro Gallery. In 2009\, he relocated to Charleston\, South Carolina where he was granted an artist in residency at the Jonathan Green Studios. \nLlanes was awarded a “Mayor’s Purchase Award” for a piece now in the art collection of the city of Charleston. In 2011\, he received first place at the Moja Art Festival Juried Exhibition. In 2012\, Oxford America recognized him as one of the “New Superstars of Southern Art.” His work was featured in a traveling exhibition The Vibrant Vision Collection at the Morris Museum in Augusta\, Georgia and the Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston\, South Carolina. \nIn 2015\, Llanes relocated with his family to Miami\, home to a large community of intellectuals\, collectors\, and fellow artists who welcomed Llanes into their cosmopolitan scene. His first solo exhibition in the city took place at Miami Dade College West\,  entitled “Preserving Cultural Heritage\,” which featured a large collection of coffee paintings. \nIn 2017\, Llanes presented his series “Marble Trace” at the North Western State University in Louisiana\, and the following year he was offered an artist in residency. He was recently invited to showcase his work in a solo exhibition at the University of Houston for the Latino Art Now Conference in Houston\, Texas. \nHis art is on permanent exhibition in the Denver Art Museum – Denver\, CO\, Cornell Fine Arts Museum Rollins College\, Snite Museum of Art – South Bend\, Indiana\, Polk Museum of Art\, Lakeland\, FL\, The Arkansas Arts Center\, Museum of Fine Arts – Little Rock\, Arkansas\, Museum of Art – DeLand – DeLand\, FL and Museum collection of Franklin G. Burroughs – Simeon B. DESCRIPTION:WHEN THERE IS NO FRONTIER is an exhibition of fantastical paintings in oil\, watercolor\, and coffee by Miami-based painter Reynier Llanes. \nReynier Llanes in his studio\nRegarded as one of the most complex and lucid artists of his generation following the Cuban tradition of narrative symbolist painting\, Llanes blends ideas and images to present vivid symbols in sweeping settings with a haunting semblance of reality. His visual wit is on full display\, infusing tropical idioms with irony and humor. \nLlanes’ work stems from a fascination with the creation of parallel universes as a means of escaping reality. Responding to collective crises that permeate our daily consciousness\, he presents viewers with a painted realm of magical landscapes\, still-lifes\, and portraits into which we can temporarily escape and find amusement. \nDiscussing the role of symbolism in his work\, Llanes says\, “When I discovered metaphors I was very young I think it was 13. That poetry changed my perception; the visual implement that I was using in my work at the time. I could create a symbolism and interpret it to a different reality – to create a different concept that I always use in my work. There is a context and evolution of my work that started happening just in the beginning of 2020 to the current times. We thank our guests for continuing to wear masks on behalf of our staff and visitors. \n  \nABOUT THE ARTIST\nBorn in 1962 in The Republic of Trinidad and Tobago\, home of Carnival and the Steel Drum; Weldon Ryan came to the United States at the age of six. He grew up in the Bronx where he spent his childhood. With his mother’s encouragement he pursued an art education\, attending The High School of Art and Design in 1977\, 1981 the State University of New York at New Paltz\, and then Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. He had a short stent at The Art Students League of New York as well. When paste-­‐up and mechanical and marker comps jobs slowed in 1987 he worked as an Urban Park Ranger for the NYC Parks Department\, where he created murals for the Pelham Bay Environmental Nature Center. Two years later Weldon joined the NYPD. Weldon Ryan is the first African American to be appointed to the New York City Police Department Composite Artist Unit. \nAt the same time he served as one of NYC finest\, Weldon painted vigorously in his studio in the D.U.M.B.O art district in Brooklyn. Several of his commercial illustrations graced the cover and pages of magazines. After 18 years of service and solving numerous crimes with his drawing skills he retired from the NYPD on December 1\, 2004 and relocated with his family to Palm Coast\, Florida. \nCommitted to serving his community for several years Weldon coached youth football\, served on the PAL executive board\, and even started a team in Bunnell\, an underserved area in Flagler County. In 2010 he served as the president of the Flagler County Art League. In 2011 he earned the honor of the Gargiulo Art Foundation Flagler County’s Artist of the Year. In 2012 Weldon and his wife\, Richlin curated art shows at the PAC gallery at Bethune-­‐Cookman University. And in 2013 they were instrumental in setting up the gallery system\, and curated art shows at the Yvonne Scarlett Golden Cultural and Educational Center. \nWeldon Ryan’s art is an “interfuse” of many techniques. He uses texture\, color\, and realistic rendering of the subject to create a unique interpretation of the world around him. He has the ability to master any medium he chooses\, be it oil\, acrylic\, watercolor\, pastels\, digital illustration\, photography\, or chavant clay. He uses the old masters’ techniques to create masterpieces.\nHis art has found a home in Palm Coast. SUMMARY:Where We Find Ourselves
DESCRIPTION:The Museum of Art – DeLand presents a powerful immersive art exhibition showcasing the work of early photographer Hugh Mangum. \nHugh Mangum\, Untitled 06\, 2021\, Archival Pigment Print\, 17 x 11½ in\nHugh Mangum was an itinerant self-taught photographer from Durham\, North Carolina\, from the early 1890s until his death in 1922 during the influenza pandemic. He traveled a rail circuit through North Carolina\, Virginia\, and West Virginia making photographs on glass plate negatives. Magnum used a variety of equipment during his career ranging from the “Penny Picture” camera which produced images the size of a penny to a Cirkut panorama camera capable of producing images 8″X 40″ without enlargement. \nMangum photographs are distinctive for the level of comfort exhibited by his subjects in front of the camera. Though the south of his era was marked by disenfranchisement\, segregation and inequality\, Mangum’s multiple-image\, glass plate negatives reveal the open-door policy of his studio and an artistic freshness unusual for the time period. \nAfter his death\, many of Mangum’s glass plate negatives were lost for almost fifty years\, stored in the tobacco pack house in Durham\, where he built his first darkroom. Fortunately the images that did survive – from more than 900 plates – were salvaged and moved to the Duke Special Collections Library\, where they were scanned and made digitally available. \nIn Where We Find Ourselves: The Photographs of Hugh Mangum\, 1897–1922\, some of the pictures have been scanned and enlarged using digital technology and printed in full color\, something unimaginable in Mangum’s time. DESCRIPTION:Are you an art lover\, a history buff\, enjoy public speaking\, have extra time\, like to meet new people…? If you answered yes\, then we invite you to attend the Docent Training Informational Meeting. \nDocents are a vital link between what’s displayed in the Museum and how visitors respond to what they see. Our docents are a diverse group of volunteers who share a passion for art and the community. They are active\, enthusiastic\, imaginative\, and knowledgeable. Historically\, a docent was a tour guide who talked while visitors listened. Today\, docents do so much more than just talk.  Our docents help visitors of all ages discover the world of art by creating inquiry-based field studies and tours centered on the art. \n  \nTo qualify as a docent you should have: \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAn abiding interest in the visual arts\nGood public speaking skills\nAbility to work well with children and adults\nFlexibility\, dependability\, time\, and commitment\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \nDocent candidates must also participate in a comprehensive training course and be available for a specific number of volunteer hours per annum. DESCRIPTION:The son of the distinguished illustrator Morris Weiss\, Jerry Weiss was influenced by cartoons and illustration art before he studied classical drawing. His initial focus was the simple\, straightforward and compassionate depiction of people; while still a student he became interested in plein air painting as well. DESCRIPTION:James V. Freeman\, Twilight Stand\, Oil on panel\, 12 x 12 ½ in.\nJames V. Freeman has built a substantial following for his oil paintings\, which are a luminous and sculpturally realistic combination of landscape and still-life created largely from memory and dreams. He has had numerous solo shows\, a solo museum show and has been in many juried exhibitions hosted by museums and arts organizations. Mr. Freeman has received numerous awards: highlights include twice earning a Grand Prize in International Artist Magazine\, inclusion in New American Paintings\, American Art Collector\, Poets & Artists magazines\, and Best in Show awards at several museums. They were indistinguishable. As a young boy in Dakar\, I learned that art is the tool I have for a direct and honest conversation with my own heart. Art always has been my rescuer\, my liberator – creatively\, emotionally\, spiritually. I’m a self-taught painter\, able to create in any media\, always painting work that is straightforward and personal\, work coming from a place within me that is constantly loud and growing. My work has been called naive. I fill my canvases with intense and basic colors\, crisply painted shapes\, and meticulous detail; I make work without conventional representational techniques; my work is free of metaphor\, irony and paradox. I paint straightforward narratives\, stories of my journey and memories of everyday experiences. Everything I create and paint comes through my relationship with the world around me\, my direct response to my fantasies\, my wonder and my spiritual growth. DESCRIPTION:Out of Paradise is an exhibition of paintings by artist Adam Straus\, presenting and distorting idealized scenes of the natural world with incisive social commentary and a signature wry humor. \nAdam Straus\, Market Forces\, 2018\nSeductive and gloomily romantic with views of skylines and seascapes\, fields\, and mountains\, the paintings go beyond contemplation\, and articulate his concerns about the cruel reality of our planet. In his oils\, Straus represents the struggle and survival of mankind and mankind’s effect on nature. \nThis exhibition of Straus’s work will feature a collection of older pieces as well as more recent ones with a particularly timely relevance. Paintings displayed from his latest series contrast current events from 2016-2020 with an optimistic view of nature’s resilience. Woodland Blvd. DeLand\, Florida 32720 \nAdmission: Members Free | Non-Members $5 \n  \nABOUT THE ARTIST\nAdam Straus is an American artist based in Riverhead\, New York. Starting as a photographer and sculptor in the the late ’70s and early ’80s\, he began making small paintings in 1986 of nocturnal landscapes inspired by his surroundings in north Florida. These paintings were often instilled with a dark humor\, social commentary\, and framed in the sheet lead he had been using on sculpture. \nHis technique has evolved throughout the years\, but always with a marked personality. In framing the paintings in lead or steel he adds a unique touch\, and more recently\, his pixelating technique evokes the particulate matter suspended in the air and water. \nStraus has exhibited extensively throughout the United States and internationally. His works can be seen in such collections as City of Orlando\, FL\, Mead Art Museum\, Amherst\, MA\, The Art Museum at F.I.U.\, Miami\, FL\, American Express\, Fidelity Investments\, Boston\, Lavandoo Corporation\, Geneva\, Switzerland\, among others. Straus received his B.A. at Miami-Dade Community College\, Miami and a B.S. in Mathematics at the University of Florida\, Gainesville. He later received his M.F.A. from Florida State University\, Tallahassee. Prior to turning to art and art education full time\, Lauren worked as a US diplomat in Latin America\, as a human rights and civil rights lawyer and as a legal writing professor at Syracuse University College of Law. Lauren was the Community Artist in Residence at the Atlantic Center for the Arts in New Smyrna Beach\, Florida until 2009. She then lived in China for 5 years\, working on quilts\, learning Chinese and providing art demonstrations and workshops to area community groups and schools before returning to the US. Lauren’s work is in private and public collections all over the country and abroad\, and catalogued in several art quilt books. DESCRIPTION:The Museum of Art – DeLand hosts an evening gallery talk with artist Bryce Hammond as he discusses his current exhibition\, Second Chance. Interpreted through the experiences of students and educators over the COVID-19 pandemic\, Hammond’s powerful series explores the new directions we’re compelled to take when confronted by unexpected change. \nHammond has been a professional artist for 26 years\, and a Middle School\, High School\, and College Art Professor for the past 12. In 2013\, he brought his MFA thesis installation\, Transient Motel\, to Alan Avery Art Company in Atlanta. DESCRIPTION:Storytellers: Faith Ringgold + Aminah Robinson is a two-artist exhibition featuring a mini survey of mixed media artworks by legendary African American female artists Faith Ringgold and Aminah Robinson. \nAminah Robinson\, People of the Book- Jericho Girl\, 2000\, Oil\, watercolor and fabric on heavy stock\, 53 x 42 in.\nFaith Ringgold\, who grew up in New York City\, is a painter\, sculptor\, teacher and author of numerous award winning children’s books. Aminah Robinson\, an Ohio native\, creates drawings\, cloth paintings\, woodcuts\, books and sculptures and grew up in Ohio. \nStorytelling has always been a powerful medium for communicating ideas\, documenting history\, and sharing knowledge with others. DESCRIPTION:Join us and Renato Rampolla\, photographer behind the photo series\, Dignity – The Light Within\, for an evening artist talk on his current exhibition at the Museum of Art – DeLand. \nRampolla’s work sheds light on a group that many of us tend not to notice: America’s homeless populations. In creating the project\, Rampolla says\, “Like many\, I used to think the homeless needed to get a job\, responsibility and gray hair like the rest of us. I learned those people could have been me.
