Woodland Blvd. DeLand\, Florida 32720 \nReception from 5:00 – 5:30 p.m. \nGallery Talk from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m. \nAdmission: Members Free  |  Non-Members $10 \nRSVP requested at (386) 734-4371 \n  \nABOUT THE ARTIST\nConsidered one of the most complex and lucid artists of his generation following the Cuban tradition of narrative symbolist painting\, Reynier Llanes was born in Pinar del Rio\, Cuba in 1985. He attended the city’s school of art (Instructores de Arte) and was tutored by one of the country’s most recognized realist artists\, Juan Miguel Suárez. In 2005\, he moved to Havana where he continued his studies and collaborated with various artists. The capital was a thriving mecca of art and culture\, and the museums the grounds for inspiration. \nIn 2007\, LIanes moved to the United States\, first settling in Naples\, Florida. There\, he introduced his work in a major exhibition entitled “Strange Visitor” at the Kapo Maestro Gallery. In 2009\, he relocated to Charleston\, South Carolina where he was granted an artist in residency at the Jonathan Green Studios. \nLlanes was awarded a “Mayor’s Purchase Award” for a piece now in the art collection of the city of Charleston. In 2011\, he received first place at the Moja Art Festival Juried Exhibition. In 2012\, Oxford America recognized him as one of the “New Superstars of Southern Art.” His work was featured in a traveling exhibition The Vibrant Vision Collection at the Morris Museum in Augusta\, Georgia and the Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston\, South Carolina. \nIn 2015\, Llanes relocated with his family to Miami\, home to a large community of intellectuals\, collectors\, and fellow artists who welcomed Llanes into their cosmopolitan scene. His first solo exhibition in the city took place at Miami Dade College West\,  entitled “Preserving Cultural Heritage\,” which featured a large collection of coffee paintings. \nIn 2017\, Llanes presented his series “Marble Trace” at the North Western State University in Louisiana\, and the following year he was offered an artist in residency. He was recently invited to showcase his work in a solo exhibition at the University of Houston for the Latino Art Now Conference in Houston\, Texas. \nHis art is on permanent exhibition in the Denver Art Museum – Denver\, CO\, Cornell Fine Arts Museum Rollins College\, Snite Museum of Art – South Bend\, Indiana\, Polk Museum of Art\, Lakeland\, FL\, The Arkansas Arts Center\, Museum of Fine Arts – Little Rock\, Arkansas\, Museum of Art – DeLand – DeLand\, FL and Museum collection of Franklin G. Burroughs – Simeon B. SUMMARY:Clyde Butcher
DESCRIPTION:Commissioned by the United Nations to create a portfolio of the mountainous lands of Cuba\, Clyde Butcher set out on three week-long expeditions into unfamiliar lands. He explored the island country’s varied geographic regions\, from the Sierra Maestra Mountains in Cuba’s eastern Granma province\, to the southern coast between Manzananilo and Santiago de Cuba. He ventured to places including Baracoa in the northeast\, the southern waterfalls of the Serra de San Juan\, and the mogotes of the west in the Piña del Rio region. While taking photographs for the Conference for the Sustainable Habitat of the Mountains\, Clyde thought about being part of an event changing history for the better\, and enthusiastically saw an opportunity to make a positive difference. His exposure to museums and classical music at an early age would prove to have a great influence on his artistic development. \n\n\n\nSpruill is most known for his “Old School Jazz and Blues Series”\, inspired by the work of his favorite artists\, Romare Bearden and Pablo Picasso. He creates colorful paintings and collages of the fathers of Jazz as well as African themed images with a complex variation of paints\, recycled and repurposed materials. Everett is considered one of Central Florida’s biggest influences on African-American Art. He designed and created art for two of Walt Disney World’s Black Heritage Celebrations\, seven works for The Amway Art Collection and currently conducts art workshops for central Florida youth through his non-profit arts foundation.\n–\nSpruill’s approach to art is democratic and springs from his belief that art belongs to\, and should be shared with\, the masses\, which is why you’ll be as likely to find his work in galleries\, high-end department stores like Bloomingdales or neighborhood community centers\, and the walls of local restaurants. DESCRIPTION:REGISTER NOW\nCamp Create at the Museum of Art – DeLand is back for Summer 2022! Our 6-week summer camp program will be available for 6-12 year olds from June 13th – July 22nd. \nThis summer\, our campers will explore all of the art-filled adventures that they can dream of. Each week a new adventure theme will ignite their creativity and imaginations. Campers will create 2D and 3D projects and will enjoy a wide variety of hands-on art experiences\, excitement\, and fun. Registration information can be found below. \nCampers will have two sessions each day and work on multiple art projects each week. Breaks will be taken throughout the day for snacks\, lunch\, and games. We invite our Campers to bring their imaginations\, create memories to last a lifetime\, and discover the adventures that await when you make art! \nThemes change each week\, so Campers may register for more than one session.  Children will be placed in small groups to ensure that they receive personalized attention. No previous art-making experience necessary!  Visits to the Museum’s galleries will enhance the educational experience and provide additional motivation and inspiration. \nCamp Create 2022 Schedule\nWeek 1: Magical Creatures      \nJune 13 – 17\n \nUnicorns\, dragons\, and any creature you can imagine will come alive this week as campers make 2D and 3D mixed media artworks. Students will leave with drawing and sculpting skills they can use to make any creature they can dream of! \n  \nWeek 2: Game On        \nJune 20 – 24\n \nCampers will be leveling up this week as they make video game art! Students will create and design their own artwork based on popular games for kids. Jump\, duck\, and fly your way through new and familiar worlds and levels all week. \n  \nWeek 3: Out in the Wild  \nJune 27 – July 1\n \nJourney deep into the wild this week as campers create self-portraits of themselves in the wild\, explore printmaking with animal prints\, collage exotic landscapes\, and more! \n  \n  \nWeek 4: Under the Sea        \nJuly 5-8\n \nGet ready to dive into water themed art projects! Students will swim\, splash\, and wade their way through everything in the water by painting\, drawing\, printing\, sculpting\, and more! \n  \n  \nWeek 5: Worldwide Adventures     \nJuly 11-15\n \nPack your bags and get ready for a fast paced adventure across the world! Campers will travel across the world through art from the pyramids to Antarctica\, stopping at travel destinations along the way. \n  \n  \nWeek 6: Enchanted Kingdom      \nJuly 18-22               \nFrom castles to dragons to princesses\, explore all that is inside an enchanted kingdom! Our campers will spend a whirlwind journey making 2D and 3D enchanted kingdom inspired creations. \n  \nCamp Create 2022 Registration Details\n\n\n\n\n\nRegistration begins March 1\, 2022. Parents may register on this webpage at that time\, or in-person at the Museum.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nCamp Create sessions for 6-12 year olds run Monday – Friday 9 a.m. – 4 p.m. Children must have finished Kindergarten to enroll.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTuition per 5 day weekly session – $190 Members / $215 Non-members and $160 Members/$185 Non-members for July 5th-8th\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister early for a $10 a week discount between March 1st – April 1st\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nReceive $10 a week discount for registering multiple children OR a $10 a week discount for multiple weeks.\n\n\n\n\n\n\nREGISTER NOW \nCamp Policies\n\n\nCancellations and Refunds \n\n\n\n\n\nNo fees will be returned or credits issued for failure to attend.\nThere will be no make-up classes due to a student’s illness\, unanticipated travel or other reasons not the responsibility of the Museum of Art – DeLand.\nIf a class is canceled\, students will be notified at least two (2) days prior to the date of class\, and tuition will be refunded. The Museum reserves the right to substitute teachers as needed.\nA refund will be issued minus a $25 processing fee for cancellation up to 7 days prior to beginning of the session.  No refund will be issued after the 7 day deadline.\n\n\n\n\n\nCheck in/Check Out \n\n\n\n\n\nStudents cannot be dropped off more than 15 minutes before the start of class and students are to be picked up promptly after the end of class. Please let the museum staff know if you are running late. A fee of $1 per minute will be assessed for late pick up or early drop off.\nStudents can only be signed out by authorized adults with identification each day.\nIf any changes need to be made to authorized adults for pick up list\, changes must be submitted in writing to Martha Underriner.\n\n\n\n\n\nLunch/Snacks \n\n\n\n\n\nCampers should bring two snacks\, a lunch\, and water bottle with them in clearly labeled containers each day. Read a little bit more about each of them below: \nMartha Underriner is the Associate Curator of Education at the Museum of Art – DeLand. She holds an MFA in Studio Art from the University of Florida\, a Master of Art Education degree from Texas Tech University\, and a BFA in Studio Art from the University of North Texas. She has taught art at all levels for 14 years and has presented on her teaching methods at state and national conferences. She is also an adjunct professor in Creative Arts at Stetson University. When not in the classroom\, Martha is in her studio welding or working with clay and glass. Martha is the camp coordinator and will be teaching every week. \nGwen Petersohn has been teaching for 35 years in various positions such as elementary and high school\, general education\, and ESE. She currently teaches at Osteen Elementary School. Her favorite thing about her job is to inspire each child to create amazing artwork and enjoy the process. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Art and Elementary Education\, a master’s degree in Varying Exceptionalities\, and is gifted endorsed. She is an educator\, author\, and professional artist who works in acrylics and has work in the VJL Gallery in Daytona. She is very enthusiastic to work at the museum this summer for Camp Create! Gwen will be teaching in week 1. \nAshley Hess is the art teacher at Heritage Middle School where she has been teaching since 2021. Prior to teaching in Volusia County\, she worked as Museum Educator at the Louvre Abu Dhabi. She grew up in Georgia where she received a bachelor’s in Sequential Art from the Savannah College of Art and Design. She also holds a Masters of Archeology\, Art History\, and Museum Studies from Paris-Sorbonne University. She specializes in watercolor\, acrylic\, pen and ink\, as well as mandala designs. Ashley will be teaching weeks 1 and 2. \nTiffany Warren is a born and raised Floridian and loves living and working here. She is a teacher in Volusia County and is entering her 8th year of teaching and 3rd year of teaching in art. One of her greatest loves is for fine arts and she loves drawing\, painting\, and using mixed media to make fun\, colorful\, and funky pieces. Her favorite things to create with her students tie in pop culture and relevant things to what they may enjoy. Her personal style mixes surrealism and abstract with natural elements. While not teaching and creating\, she enjoys spending time with her husband and three children at home or traveling. Her hobbies outside of art are playing video games\, antique hunting\, and collecting neat and unusual things. Tiffany will be teaching in weeks 2 and 3. \nKrystal Freer is an experienced teacher who currently teaches at Edgewater Elementary and she has also taught lessons at Hobby Lobby and Michael’s. She has studied art therapy at the master’s level\, but started teaching elementary art and loved it so much she put her master’s degree on hold to pursue her love of teaching art. She paints with oil and acrylics and also makes and sells jewelry and beeswax candles. Krystal will be teaching in weeks 3 and 4. \nSarah Marzilli has been in education for 14 years and is currently the art teacher at Pine Trail Elementary School.  She has previously worked as an activity director at a beach resort in Ormond Beach and is a graduate of the University of Central Florida. She is a wife and mother of three children. She is very excited to teach the Under the Sea camp and is looking forward to making wonderful under the sea creations using watercolors\, mixed media\, and more! She loves exploring different types of media with students and inspiring a love of art. Sarah will be teaching in week 4. \nKristen Kinsella-Brinley currently teaches at DeLand High school in grades 9 through 12. She teaches Photography\, Studio Art\, Drawing and Painting\, Portfolio Development\, and Advanced Placement Studio Art classes. She has been living her dream as an art teacher since 2003. She graduated from Syracuse University with a master’s degree in art education and began teaching elementary school art and later moved into teaching at the high school level. She spent her summers teaching art camp at the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse for 8 years and is excited to get back to teaching summer art camp here in DeLand! Kristen will be teaching in week 5. \nBryan Carson has been teaching for 17 years\, 16 of those at DeLand High School. Throughout his career\, he has mostly taught International Baccalaureate art program classes\, and also teaches all levels of Photography\, Drawing\, and Design. When he is not teaching he creates his own artwork based on threatened and endangered animals\, generally in the media of oil and acrylics. His other passion is travel and he has currently been to 52 different countries or territories. He has a strong desire to learn about diverse cultures throughout the world\, experience various foods\, and explore different landscapes below the surface of the ocean to the top of beautiful mountain peaks. Bryan will be teaching in week 6. \nRex Hammack is an art teacher from Orlando\, Florida. He holds a BFA in Studio Art from UCF with a concentration in painting. He especially loves working with rich colors and making paintings that make him laugh. His goal is to help students embrace their imaginations by first introducing useful tools and observation techniques and then allow students to work more intuitively. He feels that as an instructor\, his job is to help students cultivate a series of work that they are passionate about. He finds that every artist is different but pushes students beyond their perceived limitations to help them gain confidence and success. Rex will be teaching in weeks 5 and 6. \n

SUMMARY:Where We Find Ourselves
DESCRIPTION:Join the Museum of Art – DeLand and the West Volusia Historical Society for a collaborative interactive gallery tour and historical reenactment. We’ll take a step back in time to explore the intriguing photographs of Hugh Mangum from Durham\, North Carolina\, from the early 1890s until his death in 1922 and experience some “living history” of DeLand residents from the same time period. \nMangum was an itinerant photographer who traveled a rail circuit through North Carolina\, Virginia\, and West Virginia making photographs on glass plate negatives with a “Penny” camera. Mangum photographs are distinctive for the level of comfort exhibited by his subjects in front of the camera. Though the South of his era was marked by disenfranchisement\, segregation and inequality\, Mangum’s multiple-image\, glass plate negatives reveal the open-door policy of his studio and an artistic freshness unusual for the time period. Seen and experienced in the present\, the portraits hint at unexpected relationships and histories and also confirm how historical photographs have the power to subvert familiar narratives. \nDeLand counterparts from Mangum’s era will present brief tableaux and stories as we tour the gallery. “Where We Find Ourselves\,” the theme of the exhibit\, will feature local reenactor/storytellers sharing of their lives and times in the blossoming Athens of Florida. \nFEATURED REENACTORS\nBlaire N. Owens belongs to a small fraternity of artists who use classical techniques to depict contemporary subject matter. Within this is an even smaller group: Artists that have won highly competitive grants\, scholarships and commissions both public and private. And within this\, a still smaller group: Artists that can both sculpt and paint. \nFrom Michigan to Florida; from applied scientist to sculptor; Owens has made an improbable journey into the world of art and the continent of his soul. He was born in Detroit\, MI in 1958 to Katherine J. Owens\, an educator and Carl C. Owens\, a freelance illustrator and Staff Artist for the Detroit Board of Education. He grew up in a pleasant lower middle- class neighborhood on Detroits west side. Carl C. Owens became one of America’s first self-employed African American illustrators to contract directly with national corporations such as Ford Motor Company. With his father’s encouragement\, Owens held his first 2 man exhibit at the age of 16 at a fine art gallery in Detroit. As a young adult\, he set his artwork aside to pursue other interests. Years passed before his need to create art took hold again. \nOwens relocated to Florida to work for a defense contractor in 1981. He continued his art education by assisting professional sculptors at their studio foundries where he learned how to cast bronze and continued to develop through private instruction\, non-matriculated courses\, open studio sessions and workshops. Interest grew into obsession until a mass layoff catalyzed the beginning of his artistic career at the age of about 33. \nDuring the ’90s\, Owens created his first line of limited edition sculpture based on an exploration of his heritage. This was during a decade of unprecedented interest in and sales of art by African Americans\, known to many as the “Black Arts Movement” and Owens was represented by galleries in Atlanta and Orlando. His self-styled education included traveling to meet and seek the advice of nationally prominent sculptors. He competed heavily for grants and public art projects resulting in a number of awards\, including his first major public art commission for the Corporation for Olympic Development in Atlanta (CODA) in 1996\, called the Historic Auburn Avenue Relief Project. This involved creating four bronze relief sculptures of historic figures. \nIn the early 2000s\, Owens was cited six times in the Journal of the Portrait Society of America for bronze portraits worthy of example to its members. Owens has won six individual artist grants including the George Sugarman Grant in 2006\, a competition that involved thousands of visual artists from many nations. In 2007\, he helped found the Florida Sculptors Guild along with founders Amy Wieck and Linda Moore. \nOwens is known as a sculptor who works mostly on a commission basis. But a closer look reveals his range as a visual artist\, including works in oil\, acrylic\, pastel and pencil. In 2010\, he completed a mural that included 16 portraits for a private client. \nIn 2011\, Owens completed the St. Augustine Foot Soldiers Monument that is now a permanent feature of historic St. Augustine\, FL. In the fall of 2012\, Owens was cited for the fifth time in the Journal of the Portrait Society of America and won the Florida Historical Societys David C. Brotemarkle Award. He completed a life-size bronze of Dr. Arthur Harold Parker for Birmingham Board of Education in 2013. In 2017\, Owens completed work for multiple clients including a collaborative sculpture with Richard Bennett for MSU College of Law and a monument to Frankie Muse Freeman for NAACP St. Louis. \nDuring the last decade\, Owens interests expanded to include audio podcasting and writing. “Art is not something I do\, it’s who I am”\, said Owens. “I didn’t choose to be an artist\, it chose me. William H. Gass predicted my own feelings when he said that people like myself are here to add to the worlds’ objects and ideas those delineations\, carvings and symphonic spells as ought to already be there. He attended the city’s school of art (Instructores de Arte) and was tutored by one of the country’s most recognized realist artists\, Juan Miguel Suárez. In 2005\, he moved to Havana where he continued his studies and collaborated with various artists. The capital was a thriving mecca of art and culture\, and the museums the grounds for inspiration. \nIn 2007\, LIanes moved to the United States\, first settling in Naples\, Florida. There\, he introduced his work in a major exhibition entitled “Strange Visitor” at the Kapo Maestro Gallery. In 2009\, he relocated to Charleston\, South Carolina where he was granted an artist in residency at the Jonathan Green Studios. \nLlanes was awarded a “Mayor’s Purchase Award” for a piece now in the art collection of the city of Charleston. In 2011\, he received first place at the Moja Art Festival Juried Exhibition. In 2012\, Oxford America recognized him as one of the “New Superstars of Southern Art.” His work was featured in a traveling exhibition The Vibrant Vision Collection at the Morris Museum in Augusta\, Georgia and the Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston\, South Carolina. \nIn 2015\, Llanes relocated with his family to Miami\, home to a large community of intellectuals\, collectors\, and fellow artists who welcomed Llanes into their cosmopolitan scene. His first solo exhibition in the city took place at Miami Dade College West\,  entitled “Preserving Cultural Heritage\,” which featured a large collection of coffee paintings. \nIn 2017\, Llanes presented his series “Marble Trace” at the North Western State University in Louisiana\, and the following year he was offered an artist in residency. He was recently invited to showcase his work in a solo exhibition at the University of Houston for the Latino Art Now Conference in Houston\, Texas. \nHis art is on permanent exhibition in the Denver Art Museum – Denver\, CO\, Cornell Fine Arts Museum Rollins College\, Snite Museum of Art – South Bend\, Indiana\, Polk Museum of Art\, Lakeland\, FL\, The Arkansas Arts Center\, Museum of Fine Arts – Little Rock\, Arkansas\, Museum of Art – DeLand – DeLand\, FL and Museum collection of Franklin G. DESCRIPTION:WHEN THERE IS NO FRONTIER is an exhibition of fantastical paintings in oil\, watercolor\, and coffee by Miami-based painter Reynier Llanes. \nReynier Llanes in his studio\nRegarded as one of the most complex and lucid artists of his generation following the Cuban tradition of narrative symbolist painting\, Llanes blends ideas and images to present vivid symbols in sweeping settings with a haunting semblance of reality. His visual wit is on full display\, infusing tropical idioms with irony and humor. \nLlanes’ work stems from a fascination with the creation of parallel universes as a means of escaping reality. Responding to collective crises that permeate our daily consciousness\, he presents viewers with a painted realm of magical landscapes\, still-lifes\, and portraits into which we can temporarily escape and find amusement. \nDiscussing the role of symbolism in his work\, Llanes says\, “When I discovered metaphors I was very young I think it was 13. That poetry changed my perception; the visual implement that I was using in my work at the time. I could create a symbolism and interpret it to a different reality – to create a different concept that I always use in my work. There is a context and evolution of my work that started happening just in the beginning of 2020 to the current times. We thank our guests for continuing to wear masks on behalf of our staff and visitors. \n  \nABOUT THE ARTIST\nBorn in 1962 in The Republic of Trinidad and Tobago\, home of Carnival and the Steel Drum; Weldon Ryan came to the United States at the age of six. He grew up in the Bronx where he spent his childhood. With his mother’s encouragement he pursued an art education\, attending The High School of Art and Design in 1977\, 1981 the State University of New York at New Paltz\, and then Fashion Institute of Technology in New York. He had a short stent at The Art Students League of New York as well. When paste-­‐up and mechanical and marker comps jobs slowed in 1987 he worked as an Urban Park Ranger for the NYC Parks Department\, where he created murals for the Pelham Bay Environmental Nature Center. Two years later Weldon joined the NYPD. Weldon Ryan is the first African American to be appointed to the New York City Police Department Composite Artist Unit. \nAt the same time he served as one of NYC finest\, Weldon painted vigorously in his studio in the D.U.M.B.O art district in Brooklyn. Several of his commercial illustrations graced the cover and pages of magazines. After 18 years of service and solving numerous crimes with his drawing skills he retired from the NYPD on December 1\, 2004 and relocated with his family to Palm Coast\, Florida. \nCommitted to serving his community for several years Weldon coached youth football\, served on the PAL executive board\, and even started a team in Bunnell\, an underserved area in Flagler County. In 2010 he served as the president of the Flagler County Art League. In 2011 he earned the honor of the Gargiulo Art Foundation Flagler County’s Artist of the Year. In 2012 Weldon and his wife\, Richlin curated art shows at the PAC gallery at Bethune-­‐Cookman University. And in 2013 they were instrumental in setting up the gallery system\, and curated art shows at the Yvonne Scarlett Golden Cultural and Educational Center. \nWeldon Ryan’s art is an “interfuse” of many techniques. He uses texture\, color\, and realistic rendering of the subject to create a unique interpretation of the world around him. He has the ability to master any medium he chooses\, be it oil\, acrylic\, watercolor\, pastels\, digital illustration\, photography\, or chavant clay. He uses the old masters’ techniques to create masterpieces.\nHis art has found a home in Palm Coast. DESCRIPTION:The Museum of Art – DeLand presents a powerful immersive art exhibition showcasing the work of early photographer Hugh Mangum. \nHugh Mangum\, Untitled 06\, 2021\, Archival Pigment Print\, 17 x 11½ in\nHugh Mangum was an itinerant self-taught photographer from Durham\, North Carolina\, from the early 1890s until his death in 1922 during the influenza pandemic. He traveled a rail circuit through North Carolina\, Virginia\, and West Virginia making photographs on glass plate negatives. Magnum used a variety of equipment during his career ranging from the “Penny Picture” camera which produced images the size of a penny to a Cirkut panorama camera capable of producing images 8″X 40″ without enlargement. \nMangum photographs are distinctive for the level of comfort exhibited by his subjects in front of the camera. Though the south of his era was marked by disenfranchisement\, segregation and inequality\, Mangum’s multiple-image\, glass plate negatives reveal the open-door policy of his studio and an artistic freshness unusual for the time period. \nAfter his death\, many of Mangum’s glass plate negatives were lost for almost fifty years\, stored in the tobacco pack house in Durham\, where he built his first darkroom. Fortunately the images that did survive – from more than 900 plates – were salvaged and moved to the Duke Special Collections Library\, where they were scanned and made digitally available. \nIn Where We Find Ourselves: The Photographs of Hugh Mangum\, 1897–1922\, some of the pictures have been scanned and enlarged using digital technology and printed in full color\, something unimaginable in Mangum’s time. Our docents are a diverse group of volunteers who share a passion for art and the community. They are active\, enthusiastic\, imaginative\, and knowledgeable. Historically\, a docent was a tour guide who talked while visitors listened. DESCRIPTION:The son of the distinguished illustrator Morris Weiss\, Jerry Weiss was influenced by cartoons and illustration art before he studied classical drawing. His initial focus was the simple\, straightforward and compassionate depiction of people; while still a student he became interested in plein air painting as well. Weiss teaches figure drawing and painting year-round at the Art Students League of New York\, as well as intensive workshops around the country.
