SUMMARY:Jennifer York
DESCRIPTION:Artist Jennifer York presents a lively collection of her stunningly intricate papercut art in a downtown exhibition at the Museum of Art – DeLand. Explorations include her “Carousel Books\,” encasing collapsible multilayered ink illustrations\, “Shadow Houses\,” architecturally detailed and hand-cut on the streets of Europe\, “Epic Papercuts” created on a large scale from tyvek housewrap and “Mirrored Vistas” composed of vintage mirrors and scenic papercut overlays. \n“Exploration leads to inspiration\, so I wander and draw from direct observation\,” York explains. “The imagery I collect is then arranged into evocative\, thought-provoking new compositions by layering ink illustrations with intricate papercut patterns. I continue to explore and create new histories in this magical world.” \nYork grew up in rural Indiana\, earned a BFA in Sculpture with Art History minor from Pratt Institute and an MFA in Fibers from Savannah College of Art and Design. In 2003\, she founded Jennythreads Studio in Asheville\, North Carolina\, producing fine handmade apparel for stylish women\, crafting an independent\, creative living for 19 years. After traveling to a dozen countries for four month-long international art residencies in 2018-19\, Jen relocated to Charleston\, South Carolina\, in 2020. Since then she has been a Gibbes Museum of Art Visiting Artist and has exhibited at the Gibbes Museum (Charleston\, South Carolina)\, Artfields (Lake City\, South Carolina)\, the Annual National Outdoor Sculpture Competition & Exhibition (North Charleston\, South Carolina)\, and the Burroughs-Chapin Art Museum (Myrtle Beach\, South Carolina ). \nLearn more about the artist at: jennifer-york.com. \nExhibition Details\nJennifer York: Constructed Realities \nOctober 20 – December 23\, 2023 \nMuseum of Art – DeLand\, Downtown Gallery \n100 N. SUMMARY:William Entrekin
DESCRIPTION:Born to a small town in Georgia\, William Entrekin was often viewed as an outsider. As a child\, he found himself spending more and more time alone. Those days of solitude marked the beginnings of a vibrant imagination and detailed attention to the beauty of his surroundings. Entrekin describes his perspective when looking at painting as trying to “imagine myself inside it and I imagine myself breathing in it.” He continues by saying that “When I can feel the crispness of the air\, smell the trees or sea air around me\, then I know that it’s right.” \nThe works in this exhibition include egg tempera\, oils and watercolor and the subjects range from the woods to the water\, from figurative to still life. \nExhibition Details\nWILLIAM ENTREKIN: The Keen Observer \nJuly 14 – October 1\, 2023 \nMuseum of Art – DeLand \n100 N. SUMMARY:Artist Talk
DESCRIPTION:The Museum of Art – DeLand and the African American Museum of the Arts present an Artist Talk with Michel Delgado\, whose exhibition\, A Quiet Revelation will be on view at our downtown DeLand gallery. \nEVENT DETAILS\nArtist Talk with Michel Delgado \nSaturday\, April 22\, 2023  |  12 – 1 p.m. \nNoble “Thin Man” Watts Amphitheater at the African American Museum of the Arts \n 325 S. Clara Ave. DeLand\, Florida 32720 \nAdmission: Free \n  \nPresented in partnership with the African American Museum of the Arts. \n  \nARTIST STATEMENT\nGrowing up in Senegal\, on the west coast of Africa\, life and art shared the same space. They were indistinguishable. As a young boy in Dakar\, I learned that art is the tool I have for a direct and honest conversation with my own heart. Art always has been my rescuer\, my liberator – creatively\, emotionally\, spiritually. I’m a self-taught painter\, able to create in any media\, always painting work that is straightforward and personal\, work coming from a place within me that is constantly loud and growing. My work has been called naive. I fill my canvases with intense and basic colors\, crisply painted shapes\, and meticulous detail; I make work without conventional representational techniques; my work is free of metaphor\, irony and paradox. I paint straightforward narratives\, stories of my journey and memories of everyday experiences. Everything I create and paint comes through my relationship with the world around me\, my direct response to my fantasies\, my wonder and my spiritual growth. No journey in my life remains as straightforward as painting. \n  \n \nThis exhibition and its attendant events are funded in part by a grant from South Arts in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and the Florida Division of Arts & Culture. \n  \nImage: Michel Delgado\, Will You Change Me This Time?\, Mixed Media on Watercolor Paper\, 23 x 17 in.\, 2014

SUMMARY:Michel Delgado
DESCRIPTION:Unabashed and daring\, bold and bright\, Michel Delgado’s concern about the human condition is apparent in all he paints. Tragedy\, abuse\, the mundane moments of everyday being\, the happiness we know\, the fears we keep at bay\, the stories of life. Each is painted with an intense energy that literally flows off the canvas to permeate hearts and minds. \nMichel Delgado was born on the west coast of Africa\, in Dakar\, Senegal. Throughout the 1980s\, he lived in Paris\, exploring and participating in the city’s art scene. He immigrated to the United States in 1988\, and now works and creates in his studio in Chicago and South Florida. His work is represented in private collections throughout the nation\, and is part of the public collections of the Plains Art Museum in Fargo\, North Dakota and the American Visionary Museum in Baltimore\, Maryland. \nExhibition Details\nMichel Delgado: A Quiet Revelation \nApril 21 – July 2\, 2023 \nMuseum of Art – DeLand\, Downtown\n \n100 N.
