SUMMARY:Gary Lichtenstein
DESCRIPTION:Gary Lichtenstein is a visionary force in both abstract painting and silkscreen printmaking\, known for his bold use of color and fearless experimentation across media. With a body of work spanning over 200 oil-based paintings\, Lichtenstein demonstrates true abstract expressionism through the properties of light absorption and reflection\, specifically with regard to the visual impact of color. \nEqually influential is his legacy in silkscreen printing. Over the course of a 45-year career\, Lichtenstein has collaborated with more than 100 artists\, producing a wide array of editions and multiples that celebrate the medium’s expressive potential. Early inspiration came from legendary rock & roll poster artist Bob Fried\, whose psychedelic prints for bands like Pink Floyd\, The Grateful Dead\, Santana\, Genesis\, and Steppenwolf expanded the boundaries of screen printing. Together\, Fried and Lichtenstein dove into what was\, at the time\, relatively new territory: embracing the unique method of painting through silk. \nEach project that emerges from Lichtenstein’s studio—whether his own or a collaboration—tells a story rooted in experimentation\, color\, and process. This comprehensive exhibition showcases the limitless possibilities of silkscreen\, featuring works by notable artists including Cey Adams\, Al Diaz\, Futura\, Charles Hinman\, Robert Indiana\, Robert Scott\, Jessica Stockholder\, Vincent Valdez\, and more. \nLichtenstein’s works are held in the permanent collections of the Museum of Modern Art (New York)\, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art\, the Smithsonian Institution\, the Art Institute of Chicago\, the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum\, and the Butler Institute of American Art. The Bob Fried print archive is represented in the collections of MoMA\, the Whitney Museum of American Art\, and SFMOMA. \nEXHIBITION DETAILS \nGary Lichtenstein: Painter & Master Printer \nNovember 15\, 2025 – January 11\, 2026 \nMuseum of Art – DeLand \n100 N.
