This exhibition recognizes an expansive field of contemporary sculpture and the diverse practices of artists today who transform malleable materials into three dimensional artworks. Artists working in traditional and non-traditional sculptural materials are encouraged to apply. Submission period runs March 1 – May 1\, 2024. \nThe exhibition will be curated by the Museum of Art – DeLand staff along with Eliza Au\, our guest juror. Au is an Assistant Professor in Ceramics at the University of North Texas and an internationally exhibited artist with recent exhibitions at the Yingge Ceramics Museum\, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts\, and the Mesa Contemporary Art Museum. She has been an artist in residence at the Northern Clay Center as a McKnight Resident\, the Corning Museum of Glass\, and the Museum of Contemporary Craft. The exhibition will be on display at the Museum of Art – DeLand downtown location October 4 – December 29\, 2024\, in DeLand\, Florida. \nPrizes include: \nFirst Place – $2\,000 and an exhibition in one of the Museum’s galleries in 2026 or 2027. \nSecond Place – $1\,000 \nThird Place – $500 \nAdditional awards will be presented as available. \n\n\nApplication Requirements\nAll work must be ready for installation. Wall hanging works are restricted to a weight limit of no more than 50 pounds per hanging component. If there are multiple hanging components\, each one must be less than 50 pounds. Works are not able to be hung from the ceiling. The Museum of Art – DeLand reserves the right to exclude any entry that does not adhere to guidelines or is not able to be installed. Artists are responsible for works with complex installations and are recommended to make an appointment with Museum staff to install their own work. The exhibition space is on the second floor of the building\, so all components of works must be able to go up stairs or fit into an elevator. The elevator dimensions are 80in x 49in x 73in. The elevator door opening is 80in x 40in. \nArtists may submit up to three artworks for consideration. Submission cost is $10 per each artwork submitted.  Each artwork will require a separate application but artists may submit up to three images per artwork on each application.  Please make sure additional images are clearly labeled as second views (Artwork Title View #1\, Artwork Title View #2). One video file per artwork may be submitted in lieu of an additional photo. Images should be of high quality with a minimum of 1920 pixels on the longest side. \nThis exhibition will be widely publicized and the Museum of Art – DeLand reserves the right to use images of accepted work for the purpose of publicity and publication. An exhibition catalog including all of the works will be mailed to each of the artists after the exhibition. \nArtwork will be insured while on site at the Museum of Art – DeLand. Campers will make art inspired by things around us that exude fluorescence and radiate light\, like the glistening moon\, fireflies ablaze\, and mysterious bioluminescent creatures that dwell under the sea. We will use materials such as glow in the dark and black light reactive paints to create light reactive artwork using color theory. \nWeek 6: Decades Week\n \nJuly 22nd-26th          \n \nGet ready to travel back in time to the 70s\, 80s\, & 90s to learn about the rise of new art eras and their impact. Discover art styles and techniques that reflect the decades; like neon designs from the 80s\, groovy colors from the 70s\, and street art from the 90s. Students will be able to explore new avenues of creative thinking and innovative artmaking. Teen Arts Academy students will engage in 2D and 3D methods and will study art techniques\, art history\, and a variety of art media. No previous experience necessary!  Visits to the Museum’s galleries and walkable field trips to local landmarks will enhance the educational experience and provide additional motivation and inspiration. \nThe Teen Arts Academy meets at our downtown location at 100 N. Woodland Blvd. from 10am-3pm Monday through Friday of each week. \n  \n2024 Teen Arts Academy Schedule\n \nJune 10th-14th All About Me with Bryan Carson \nFor ages 12 and up \n“All About Me” is a week of exploration that focuses solely on the student’s interests and own portrait or likeness. We will explore various ways to portray the student’s likeness through a variety of styles\, mediums\, and references to art history. Examples of these could be:  painted self-portraits in a simplified style of Chuck Close using the grid method\, portraits in graphite that are first distorted through stretching them in Photoshop\, cutting up and rearranging features of the face\, a portrait full of pattern\, whiplash lines and organic shapes in the Art Nouveau style\, or a collage of images that describe the student\, similar to the work of James Rosenquist. \nJune 17th-21st The Arts and Crafts of Japan with Fontaine Rodgers \nFor ages 12 and up\n \nSumi-e is the centuries old Japanese art of monochrome painting using black ink\, special brushes\, and traditional marks originally inspired by kanji characters.  This session will include origami\, Japanese paper cutting\, and a traditional dragon painting with accents in blue or gold. \nJuly 8th-12th ARTivism: Community Engaged Creative Explorations with Dr. Rajni Shankar-Brown \nFor ages 12-15 (exceptions by approval) \nHow do the arts bring diverse individuals and communities together? How can we use our creative talents for improving local art engagement and social change? This week fosters a variety of skills in the areas of fine arts\, creativity\, collaboration and community engagement. Immersive learning activities are designed to inspire creative thought processes and produce diverse community-engaged skillsets. Students will nurture their artistic creativity while building leadership skills and confidence. We will create a variety of art\, meet local leaders\, learn about local community organizations\, and develop a collective project for achieving social impact. Through an array of hands-on activities\, Teen Arts Academy participants will be encouraged to inquire\, explore\, reflect\, CREATE\, and grow! \nJuly 15th-19th ARTivism: Developing as Artists\, Global Citizens\, and Leaders with Dr. Rajni Shankar-Brown \nFor ages 12-15 (exceptions by approval) \nHow do the arts advance human rights and global movements? What roles can artists play in positively impacting our world? This week fosters imagination\, leadership\, and global citizenship. Students will be immersed in interactive exercises to explore and develop their artistic skillsets. We will explore global issues\, learn about the Universal Declaration of Human Rights\, study diverse artists and cultures\, and examine the powerful role of the arts in our interconnected world. Through a variety of art activities\, Teen Arts Academy students will be encouraged to inquire\, explore\, reflect\, CREATE\, and grow! \n\nRegistration begins March 1st\, 2024. The Museum reserves the right to substitute teachers as needed.\nA refund will be issued minus a $25 processing fee for cancellation up to 7 days prior to the beginning of the session.  No refund will be issued after the 7 day deadline.\n\n\n\nCheck in/Check Out \n\n\n\nStudents cannot be dropped off more than 15 minutes before the start of class and students are to be picked up promptly at the end of class. Please let the museum staff know if you are running late. A fee may be assessed for late pick-ups.\nStudents can only be signed out by authorized adults with identification each day.\nIf any changes need to be made to authorized adults for pick up list\, changes must be submitted in writing to Martha Underriner.\n\n\n\nLunch/Snacks \n\n\n\nCampers are welcome to bring snacks\, a lunch\, and water bottle with them in clearly labeled containers each day. No refrigeration or microwave is available.\nIf your teen needs any type of medications during camp\, please see Martha Underriner or the teacher on Monday at check in.\nStudents may take short field trips to other locations within walking distance.
